THE LAST SHIP Season 3 - spoilers, reviews, discussions and junk...

Yay.. military porn is coming back!

I really like the show.. a good balance of action, drama and occasional humor and chest thumping "Team America" level of showcasing american military gadgets and equipment (kinda like JAG back in the day though that show was even more ridiculous at times).

^^I never really cared JAG that much. I know the show has taken criticism for showing its characters having shall we say a far more exciting job than the typical JAG officer has, but that part I'm okay with, since its TV and realism does not translate well into drama. Real life cops don't usually see excitement every damn week like they do in procedurals, and life in the military isn't near as exciting as most shows and movies make it seem.

No, what bothered me about JAG was it was pretty badly written. It literally is the embodiment of the court-room drama trope where the main character will win the case on no reason other than delivering an impassioned speech about justice and the plot twists were usually so obvious you'd have to be brain-dead not to see them coming, or so far out of left field that they made no sense at all.

JAG was at its worst in the first season. It was basically the "Harm as Action Man" show. It actually improved when it turned into the impassioned lawyer show.

I've said it before...the Navy show I really want to see is one like BBC's Warship or ABC's Sea Patrol, but US TV nets seem incapable of producing a show like that without ruining it. I started watching this show because I figured it was as close as I was going to get to the show I want. Whatever. It's still awesome.

I remember Sea Patrol back when it aired on Showcase in Canada and I would catch random episodes here and there. Though I never felt compelled to stick with it as a regular viewer, it did keep me entertained on a few quiet afternoons that popped up during the summer of 2011.

I caught it by accident on Youtube and was immediately hooked...and jealous of all the Australians that got to watch something like that and we got crap like The Last Resort (that god-awful submarine show on our ABC...).

If I recall correctly, one of the (occasional) cast from Sea Patrol was a regular on The Last Resort. (Grace Sheppard was Swains wife on Sea Patrol)

I've managed to pick up the first season of Sea Patrol on dvd and enjoyed it. (It's regularly aired here though. Also got all the seasons of JAG). I'm hoping for a release of Season 2 of the Last Ship on dvd/blu soon and that season 3 is picked up here.

I didn't get a chance to post this yesterday, but it looks like TNT ran a Last Ship marathon for Memorial Day. Hopefully those not caught up yet got to see it...

They're releasing season 2 on dvd/blu over in the UK on the 13th June too. Given Sky probably won't air it the day after the US, I'll do a catchup then

Also, they really have developed the crew of the Nathan James quite extensively. It's nothing to see a random background player and instantly recognize who they are. Very few ship based shows manage to pull this off. Among the Star Treks, TOS came the closest with background guys like Mr. Leslie, TNG also had a few notable background extras, but with The Last Ship it almost feels like I really spending each summer aboard the Nathan James.

Even when the episodes are average, the show is still a delight to watch. Looking forward to the new season.
The producers actually cast real sailors for the background scenes, and do make an effort to rehire the same sailors if they're available and not deployed. A gentleman from my last command has been used in at least three episodes.

TNT had a preview last week for The Last Ship which included the entire first episode. But my DVR started too late so I'll just wait until the two-hour premiere.

Real sailors re used for the background gang, anyone without dialogue, meanwhile anyone with dialogue are usually actors, due to SAG rules.

That would explain why there are some very detailed spoilers posted online. I only skimmed over the first few paragraphs. If you're curious about Dr. Scott's fate and don't want to wait the little over a week left, the info is out there.

I didn't realize the preview had the entire first episode! It's sitting on my DVR right now so I may just have to watch it tonight! :techman:

I didn't know there would be an early showing of the first episode. I didn't record anything at all....

I didn't set mine to record it. My DVR just seems to record previews for shows that I already have programmed to record.

We watched the episode this evening and it was great. This is going to be a good season. One thing felt a little odd to me though.

I felt like I was missing something with the way the episode started. They just jumped ahead in time and Dr. Scott's fate almost felt like an afterthought. I hope they don't treat any more deaths on the show like that

Yeah...that kind of sucks. I didn't know about it till just now when i got set to watch it.

You know what kind of sucks? 50 people getting slaughtered in a nightclub when they just wanted to have a drink and dance.

Which is also a also in the show, so they figured you could wait a week or so to air it. You know who can't wait? The dead.
