The Last Jedi - Actually Widely Hated?

Disney has definitely acknowledged the hate towards TLJ, with how they've handled TROS.

Much to the displeasure of some, TLJ will go down in history as divisive. TROS cemented that.

Overall, the sequel trilogy is a directionless disappointment driven by undeniable corporate mismanagement.

STAR WARS in general hasn't really had much concrete direction to it - and that started with George Lucas himself and the original STAR WARS film in 1977. Lucas changed so much as he went along, yeah, never much of a plan there.

What are you talking about? The plan has never changed! I mean we're still following Annikin Starkiller, Lord Protector of Aquilae, right?

He's one of my favorite characters. Aquilae is my favorite planet! Plus, who can forget Han's fantastic green skin!

Starwars is meant to be a simple fun crowd pleaser not some grand thinking master piece.
It has been both and has demonstrated growth over time, starting with ESB. There is no harm in expanding the mythological themes in the franchise, including how good men go bad, the fall of democracy, and heroes being on both sides.

Don't blame Johnson. It started with Lucas and Kasdan and Kershner.

One thing I like about the guy on Star Wars Explained is even if he does have qualms with whichever Star Wars product he's discussing, he's never really negative about it, he talks it over calmly and rationally, expressing his views without getting insulting.
Alex Damon is great, and he really knows his stuff, too. The guy is a whiz at SW trivia.

The Last Jedi gets a lot of grief, and there is some stuff in there that I just plain don't like, but there is other stuff that is absolutely brilliant. The stuff with Luke and Rey and Kylo Ren was Empire Strikes Back level good. Rian Johnson didn't go in the direction with Luke Skywalker that I was expecting, but I don't consider that a bad thing. He hit the nail right on the head when he had Luke explain how the Jedi were responsible for the rise of the Sith and how the old order deserved to be swept into the waste bin of history. Luke's confrontation Kylo Ren was amazing.

The other half of the movie was not as good. Poe Dameron was an insubordinate imbecile who deserved every bit of the dressing-down Admiral Holdo gave him and then some. The only Poe Dameron moment in the entire movie that made me cheer was when Leia stunned him. Finn was a bumbling goofball who only managed to survive by pure luck, ala Jar-Jar Binks. The Canto Bight sequences were pointless filler that didn't move the story forward at all and Benicio Del Toro's character had me scratching my head and wondering why they even bothered with him.

TROS redeemed Finn to a degree by making him Force sensitive, meaning it wasn't pure luck but subconscious manipulation of the Force that aided him. I still didn't care for Poe in The Rise of Skywalker. The character that I liked in The Force Awakens was never seen again after that movie, replaced by a self-righteous jerk.

The Canto Bight stuff definitely needed a couple more drafts. I didn't think it was terrible, but it didn't match the rest of the film.
