The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

Eccleston could work. Especially now that he's older and a little more seasoned and would give off "a little world weary but still not too old to get the job done" vibes as Bond.

I don' know, if we were going to cast a 62 year old as Bond I can think of a heap of better (slightly younger) options.

Eccleston as M would be interesting.

An interesting bit of news that links the factual to the fictional. The UK has despatched HMS Dragon to the Mediterranean, ostensibly to defend British interests and citizens.

What's interesting is that HMS Dragon was in No Time to Die. In fact, given it was Dragon that launched the missile assault on Safin's island you legitimately could say HMS Dragon killed James Bond...

Yeah, if they're saying (as rumored) Cavill is too old, that pretty much limits the potential actors to 40 and under

Not so long ago an actor in his early to mid 40s would be perfectly acceptable but they definitely seem to want to skew younger now.

From one perspective it makes sense, when you have two years between films it isn't a major issue that Brosnan is 42 because you can still get four films out of him before he's 50! Hire Cavill now at 42 and with the gaps you get these days by the time you get four films out of him he'll be in his mid 50s.

By contrast hire Elordi and you'll get four films out of him before he's the age Cavill is now!

Now I've always thought there are ways around this. You could film movies back to back, and you could limit how long someone is going to be in the role. If you take the Bale/Batman option and say you're hiring Cavill specifically to make a trilogy that's feasible, but Eon always seemed to want someone in the role for the long term and Amazon seem to be going down that route also.

I’ve always been of the view that the actor playing Bond shouldn’t be too young, as he is meant to be an ex-submarine commander (not sure if they ever acknowledged this in the Craig movies, TBF). Connery was only 32 when cast, Lazenby 29, but by the time Connery returned for DAF at 41, he looked at least as old as 42 year-old Brosnan in his debut or 41 year-old Dalton in his. Craig at 38 was the youngest debutante Bond since Lazenby but I think people were more focused on his hair and eye colours and his untraditional Bond looks.

Moore, of course remains the only actor to have been older than his immediate predecessor (not counting Connery reprising the role after OHMSS). “I thought it was time to make way for an older man”, I once saw Connery quoted as saying!

Of course, most people now look younger than people the same age did 50 or 60 years ago. There’s a Twitter account that shows photos of footballers from the 1960s or 1970s and they’re professional sportsmen in their 20s and 30s who look more like the cast of Dad’s Army!

Just think, only nine years separates these two movies and Connery looks like he's aged twice that.

I feel I might be forgetting something completely obvious, but I don't think they ever acknowledged Bond having a naval career or any military service at all in the Craig movies.

He wasn't a submarine commander, that I recall, he was a member of the Royal Naval Reserves, but I think the Craig movies made him a member of the SAS/SBS

You can even look at DAF vs You Only Live Twice! Definitely Thunderball!
