The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

There's a lot of guesswork and rumor in that article, and even Cuneyt Arkin's story changed over the years from the principled stand of "Bond represents imperialism and I'm holding up my own values" to grumpy old man claiming the powers that be (Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman? Execs at United Artists?) were racist. Sorry, I don't buy it.
I watched the videos just now and I couldn't believe it either.

I'm sure there's some auditions that never came to light, as well as some names they kicked around that didn't get to the audition point. The thing is, I've never heard of them entertaining the idea of Bond being played by someone who wasn't from the UK, Ireland, Australia, or the U.S. If they ever cast an person of color as Bond, it'll be someone who's lived in the UK all his life, it won't be someone who'll have a language barrier and an accent to overcome.

Closest I’ve here was Goran Visnic, purportedly on the shortlist to replace Brosnan, but for whom accent issues (despite apparently hiring an accent coach) proved insurmountable. Given that he would probably pass for English much easier than the average Turkish actor, I’m not convinced that Eon looked at that end of the world.

Hell, just about everybody who auditioned at the same time George Lazenby did had more acting experience than George, and over the years roughly five or six names are now associated with the OHMSS casting call for the new 007.

Apparently Christopher Lambert was looked at in the 80s.

"You talk funny, Bond. Where are you from?"

"Lots of different places."

I mean given Bond's mum was Swiss you could maybe explain away a slight accent.

According to Wiki Daniel Pilon and Eric Braeden were both considered

I was assuming Pilon was French Canadian given his name and the fact he was born in Quebec.

As for Braeden imagine, a German Bond

I've always been pretty clear, I don't care where an actor comes from so long as he can convincingly play British.

I find it interesting that here in the BBS, there is a lot of praise for OHMSS and George Lazenby's performance as Bond; yet, over in the Steve Hoffman Visual Arts forum, someone started a thread posing the same question about OHMSS and Lazenby, and the response has been almost overwhelmingly negative.

To each their own.

There are lots of fans who don't like Timothy Dalton and think Roger Moore was too campy and cheesy and not a good enough actor for the role of 007. When you have six canonical actors playing Bond it gives everyone an actor to praise and another to underrate or downright dismiss.

I wonder are they casual fans? This thread does seem mainly to be populated by more dedicated ones.

Speaking for myself, I found him a not-terrible Bond choice, until he made that 2017 documentary; “Becoming Bond”…my opinion changed a bit about the actor and the man…

For the actor and the man?…worse…but I can be a (freely admitted) PolyAnna when it comes to actors I like in roles I like. I want them to love and honor the roles/movies/franchises as much (or more) as I do!!!

Thursday Murder Club was... Good. If you didn't read the books it was probably really good. The cast was terrific. (Pierce looks like he's having a ball.)

If you read the books? You may be packing up your torches and pitchforks and heading to Chris Columbus' house. Over one damn scene. WHY?!?
