The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

I'm increasingly convinced the unmade version of Diamonds Are Forever would have been pretty incredible had the studio been able to budget such a spectacle. DAF may be the biggest missed opportunity in the franchise.

I am always a fan of the detailed “behind the scenes” and “analysis” information presented in videos like these!

I love learning about this stuff!

Man that original idea for Diamonds would have been fantastic (mot 100% sold on the killer cats mind you)

For once an in-depth, sensible look at who the next 007 might be. Yes a few of the usual suspects are in there but even so they acknowledge age is a factor, there's one very left-field, very old choice, but to be honest if you were going down the older Bond route you might as well use Tim or Pierce!

Most of my picks are in here (aside from Jack O'Connell) some guys I hadn't considered (but actually now I think about it Nicholas Hoult could pull it off) and a heap of people I've never heard of.

My top three remains Turner. Page. Madden, but I appreciate Turner is probably knocking on too old already and Madden isn't far behind. I still think someone in their early forties is feasible but Eon would have to commit to a film every three years and probably accept they might only get a trilogy out of the new guy before they have to rehire, although they could get creative and film a couple of movies back to back.

I never really noticed before but my top three picks would all be very different Bonds. Turner would be quite like Dalton I think, Page has the lightness of touch of a Rog or Brosnan, and Madden would be more Connery-like I think. I guess this shows that I'm struggling to know what kind of Bond I want next so I guess I can see how Barbara and Michael might be struggling too!

When Brosnan left I kinda wanted them to give Salmon a go. Then again, perhaps weirdly, I also desperately wanted them to give the job to Alexis Denisof at the time!

Yeah, Salmon was in the right age range back then, and I think even Brosnan would have been more okay with not being asked back if he knew it was for Salmon.

Looking back, I'm a bit surprised nobody even made a Bondsploitation project with Salmon as the lead.

Having just watch The Gentlemen (and The Time Traveler's Wife) I'd be all on board with Theo James.

I still wouldn't say no to Henry Cavil.

I still wouldn't be opposed to Cavill, I just think increasingly if he were Bond it might lean too much into a pastiche of other Bonds.

True. Sometimes traditional is the right move to make. Not saying it is in this instance but you could say Brosnan was too traditional. In some respects you might even argue Rog was.

Brosnan was kind of of a "greatest hits" Bond – I never felt like there was his own distinct take on the character, more like they took Connery's charm, Moore's humor, Dalton's ruthlessness, and occasional brief glimpses of Lazenby's vulnerability, and threw them all in a blender together.

Which is why he's the second best Bond. (Even I'm not going to argue against Connery.) I'm glad you mentioned the ruthless part. It always seemed like Brosnan was just getting that under the RADAR.
