The James Bond Film Discussion Thread (With Bonus Lazenby!)

Well there is the Johnny English films
I like also how those movies have - I’m assuming intentionally - cast actors who were in the running for Bond, such as Dominic West, Charles Dance and Michael Gambon. Plus QOS’ Olga Kurylenko and NSNA’s M are both on Johnny English Strikes Again, while DAD’s Rosamund Pike is in JE Reborn.

I think Kim Bassinger is the weak link in NSNA, and that Klaus Maria Brandauer and Barbara Carrera elevate the film; and Connery looks more fit and engaged than he did in his last official Bond film 'Diamonds Are Forever.'

DAD (second half) was definitely very over-the-top but I think not that much more than usual, still only at or arguably even less then level of TSWLM rather than as much as let alone more than Moonraker. I think energy laser going bad was just actually really good idea as was villain who hates but also mimics Bond. It also just worked as being 40th anniversary spectacular and possible, and what it actually ended up being, finale (and dark gritty revenge motivation is part of Bond but pretty small, especially at the time less focused on part).

I'm pretty unsuual in that while GoldenEye is my favorite I think Tomorrow Never Dies is my least favorite, really bland, lacking villain, overhype-y, underwhelming love interest, really perfunctory, uninteresting sidekick and action scenes.

Unless Sean goes to Russia it's inevitable that Bond actors' sophomore efforts will come out sophomoric.

Saw Black Bag tonight.

I know he's too old but Amazon, just give me one Fassbender as Bond film, just one!

Amusingly he somehow manages to play George Smiley and James Bond simultaneously (if you can imagine that).

Plus it features a Bond (Brosnan) and a Moneypenny (Harris).

And Regé-Jean Page, who's on my Bond list if no one else's!
Watched it last night. Really enjoyed it. Fass was definitely giving Harry Palmer vibes with the glasses and roll up jerseys. Pierce added yet another bizarre accent to his collection. And Cate came across like a real classic movie star (which I guess she is by now). I thought the script and direction were both brilliant; apparently Koepp has had the idea kicking around since doing his research for the first M:I movie in the mid-1990s, but it’s very far removed from that series.

Apparently he has an idea also for a sequel. I hope the apparently underwhelming box office returns haven’t nipped it in the bud.

Oh I'd watch the hell out of a sequel!

Only downside was Brosnan's nose prosthetic!

Good to see the nearly century-old MGM sign has managed to survive all this time. I remember it was first dismantled and taken down when Lorimar Pictures took over MGM's original lot in the 80's, and I don't know if it's ever been seen since. I'm not sure if this new location for the sign is going to be nearly as visible as it was in the old days.

Interestingly, the building they re-hung the sign on is where the first two Star Trek pilots were filmed - stages 14 and 15.

Octopuusy always gets too much flak, from the clown disguise to the Indian setting to the music. Honestly it's one of the three best Moore 007 films.
