If it wasn't true then that's even more reason to be skeptical of them. They weren't constrained but decided to "super kewl" up everything to extreme levels for no reason other than "super kewl."

Their official reasoning was to update the look.

I think the real behind the scenes reason is money. New design = new copyright = more products to sell with its image.

Another subjective opinion.
No. It really isn't. A quick google search will reveal the official IP holder's view of canon. Canonical law dates back to the early Catholic Church. Only the Catholic Church can determine what is canonical (in its jurisdiction). The use of "canon" is clearly derived from the Catholic example (Trek is hardly the only franchise to adopt this model).

Which...I get. From a corporate perspective, I get it. I don't like it. I think the show suffers because so much on the series has to be altered so CBS can make a lot of money off the show, but at least the copyright and corporate profits thing makes sense.

Anything else is just pandering and being different just for the sake of being edgy.

Is DSC canon? Yes.

Is it in the Prime timeline? There are some dodgy moments where it seems the writers either got drunk or high or just didn't care about the continuity, but yes. Most everything mentioned or seen thus far can fit in the established Prime timeline between ENT and TOS.

But that doesn't mean the show isn't fugly as hell and couldn't use a facelift to make it look a little more like TOS.

There is no reason not to trust them.

They wouldn't lie about owning the TOS designs because someone could prove they don't.

There's a possibility some of the ownership isn't as clear cut legally as CBS would like.

I mean seriously, they're still publishing TOS products, toys, books, they're licencing TOS designs to manufacturers.

If CBS didn't have full control of those designs, they wouldn't still be doing that

You (nor anyone else) has any idea what payments are being made to who to continue producing those products. CBS may own it all. But, there were a lot of hands in the cookie jar over the years.

So ownership may not be as clear cut as they like.
