The Inner Light

I don't really have any idea, but I'm not a Kataanian cultural expert or such. Just because it doesn't make sense to us as humans doesn't mean it didn't make sense to them at the time.

LOWER DECKS did show at least another probe, so the people of Kataan clearly sent multiple probes.

VOY did a great version of this idea with "MEMORIAL", as well.

As much as it pains me to say it, "Memorial" is far superior to "The Inner Light".
I can't agree that "MEMORIAL" is superior to "The Inner Light", but it definitely is one of the best VOY episodes.

I'll split the difference with you: "MEMORIAL" is far superior to many, many episodes in the franchise.

I just simply never bought the technology presented in the episode. Which is one of many things about it that just don't work for me. Honestly? I'd rather watch "Code of Honor", "Justice" or "Angel One".

I think my assumption has always been that Kataan basically poured all their resources into this probe because it might be their only shot at being remembered at all and they might not have the time remaining to do more. One might argue that they would have been better off doing something else, but assuming they were really the relatively benevolent civilization they seem to be, I'm disinclined to speak ill of the dead.
The only thing that bewilders me is...

All we can do is make this one probe, to barely get off our world, & install our inexplicably advanced mind hacking tech onto it, which will include in-depth experience of our culture & history, so somebody, somewhere will remember that we existed.

You'd think when writing that program, one original thinker would've thought to include a distress call section, in the event anyone found it in time to evacuate them all somewhere. Like...

"Oh, BTW... Just in case you get this & we're still around? HELP!!!!"
