The Hunger Games is far removed from Twilight. The main thrust of THG is the deconstruction of Katniss, as a person, as a result of "The Games" into which she is compelled to partake. It's not a fluffy romance story - heck, Katniss spends most of the novels clearly ill-at-ease with romance. Rather, this is a story of what happens to people put in extreme circumstances at a young age.
THG books are brutally realistic in terms of how trauma affects character (Mockingjay, despite its faults, is probably the most realistic ending to a story that I've read - or seen - in quite some time). I know that Suzanne Collins' books are marketed as YA (Young Adult) stories. But there is a clear sophistication in storytelling that makes the books (and hopefully the films) accessible to readers (and viewers) of all ages.
I liked all three books. On other sites I have notice that many teenage girls seem to have taken the Team Gale/Team Peeta approached to the novels as if the 'triangle' was the only thing that matter. The true message of the books seem to have flown straight over the heads of these girls.
I will see the movie early next week. I am not sure how the first person narration of the book can be changed to the third person on the screen. Katniss thought were important because it meant that the viewers of the Games didn't know what she was going to do.

I saw some "post midnight" interviews and the couple of teen girls only comments were about Peeta/Gale. I agree it seems the thrust of the story passed them by, I blame hormones.
Like you I thought about how they would play out Katniss' thoughts. Most of her actions are done as a response to what she'd like to do vs what the audience wants her to do, especially concerning the romance angle(or getting a parachute of supplies). Her thoughts on Peeta are critical to the point where when she's in the cave and may be realizing something genuine she then doesn't want the cameras around. They could do a running voice over I suppose.
Well...it looks like I'll be seeing this on Sunday! I can't wait.
Apparently after tax rebates Lionsgate only spent around $80 million on the movie, with another $40 on marketing. Major score for them.
I just finished reading the trilogy and loved it all. I'm going to wait a week before seeing the movie, though.
Indeed they are. I noted that in the OP, upwards of $125m.
Those midnight numbers are placing it on track for the predicts to be in the ballpark.
It also looks like Sunday afternoon is when I'll be seeing it as well Admiral. But I'm a few time zones further east than you, right, so I may see it first!
I enjoyed the movie. Good story, gripping, disturbing in many ways, and Jennifer Lawrence can act. Nice visuals too. Made me think of The Wizard of Oz meets The Fifth Element. Knowing nothing about the books, I have no idea what the next two installments are about. Maybe something about bringing down the system? I don't know. Looks like Liam "Mr. Miley Cyrus" Hemsworth will have a bigger part though. Maybe I'll get around to reading the synopses of the next two books at some point to find out. So, what are they going to call the next one? The Hunger Games: Catching Fire?
The Gale role, played by Liam Hemsworth, increases considerably in the third book. If I remember correctly it is only about the same, or only slightly larger in the second book as it was in the first book.
I didn't recognize him at first either, then at some point I thought... Hey, that looks like Lenny Kravitz.
The film was quite good. As a fan of the books (I've read each one twice), I thought that they did a solid job of adapting the story from the page to the screen. If there's a criticism it's that the film seemed unevenly paced ... and the ending felt anti-climactic.
Otherwise, it was a very emotional, moving ... and oftentimes graphic ... film.
