"The Holiest Thing" Released

Well, while I think the Director's Cut ending is less on-the-nose, I see why it was dropped in favor if a face to face conversation. Watching people watch TV is dull. That said, the eventual solution was rather ham-handedly scritped, so neither quite delivers.

Is this "Director's Cut" the same version that was released to Kickstarter backers about a year ago? Knowing it was not the "finished" version, I never got around to watching it.

"The Holiest Thing" was screened to a theatre audience and was nearly released two years ago. Minutes before it was to be uploaded to the public, we decided not do so. It was reworked a bit and was finally released last month.

Yes, this "Director's Cut" is that version screened two years ago, and again at a convention a year ago, and which was provided to our Kickstarter donors.

It's a nice job. The Phase II Enterprise is something I have to get used to, I don't know what to think of the look at this point. I'm guessing Spock will eventually be phased out and Xon will be the new Science Officer for the Enterprise. If this is the case, wouldn't Sulu become the new First Officer when Spock leaves his commission? Or would Will Decker enter the scene? I'm not too familiar on what Roddenberry planned to the Phase II series.

Why wouldn't Spock stay until the ship had docked in orbit around Earth? Until Kirk gets flag rank, why would Spock leave early, given his loyalty to Kirk?
Do not see why we need to seeing Decker on the Enterprise as XO.

I think he might be thinking that unless Mister Spock has left the ship, and Lieutenant Xon is now Science Officer and unless Commander Decker is now on board as the Executive Officer, and unless Lieutenant (j.g.) Ilia is now on board as Navigator and unless Lieutenant Chekov is now the Weapons and Chief of Security Officer, it's not really the Phase II series as originally planed in the late 1970's.

I guess, that is one of the reasons, Phase II was renamed back to New Voyages. Maybe Greg can shed more light on this?Xon is at the moment really low in the ranks, I don't see him become science officer that fast.

But then again, JJ promoted Kirk from Ensign to Captain in just one movie...

I thought the last episode was the end of the 5 year mission. Isn't phase II the next block of.missions after the refit?

Why can't he??? Science Officer doesn't mean first Officer, and Lieutenant is an officer's rank and Xon could be as good as other high ranking officers, maybe even better.

It really is a mixed bag... the engines, Xon, Chekov's promotion, Scotty's mustache.... its hard to tell what the intended goal of the series is, especially with going back to the NV moniker, yet keeping the new engines....

This is where things get a bit murky. Like you, I always assumed that there was a 2nd 5ym in between TMP and TWK, giving time for the Enterprise to become outdated, and giving time for some militaristic event to spark the uniform changes and Kirk's benching. This is when I would set the P2 series, even if events of TMP preclude Xon, Ilia and Decker from participating. There is no way to include the plans of the "real" Phase 2 in a timeline that includes the Movies. In reality, it was "TMP" OR "P2".... not both.

According to James' reasoning for the Holiest Thing timeline, he assumes that there was a lot more time between the initial series and the Wrath of Khan, giving David time to grow up, and giving time for the aesthetics to change so drastically between TOS and TMP. That would put the Phase II 5YM directly after the TOS 5YM. Yet, they also talk about finishing the 5YM, and ending with a bridge to the movies, and with things like Arex on the bridge.... its rather hard to tell the stated intent anymore. Seems a bit self contradictory from a narrative standpoint.

I liked the director's cut a bit more ...thanks for sharing

Agreed. While it lacked the direct actor-on-actor interaction of the official release, the fact that Kirk isn't nearly so out-of-character in the director's cut much more than makes up for the action happening via viewscreen.

Star Trek New Voyages will also be present at the FedCon covention in Germany. They have been for several years now.
The Holiest Thing is one of the episode that will be shown during this convention.

It would have been nice if James Cawley of some of the cast would have had time to come.
But of course USA - Germany isn't close by, and they probably have enough other working and/or personal commitments.
