The Hobbit movies

They could just move the production to British Columbia. Im biased being from there though. Then again it wouldnt look good seeing a dwarf or hobbit being eaten by a grizzly or killer whale.

If they really want to be cheap about it they should film in Vancouver. I heard all the Sci-Fi shows are doing it.:p

So while Jackson is fighting with the union down there in NZ for the actors a fire breaks out a warehouse used for the filming?

Hmm....

Yea, I was under the impression they were actually going to show the whole White Council storyline instead of just having Gandalf throw out a few lines.

Ian Holm is a bit too old to play Bilbo's younger self in The Hobbit.

Isn't it a plot point that he hasn't aged since The Hobbit? Now, I haven't seen Holm recently, but he can't have aged that much since 2003 or whenever.

They actually started filming in October 1999 - ELEVEN years ago!

I work doing physio with older people and I can tell you the difference between late 60's and 80 can see MAJOR deterioration of joints and atrophying of musculature.

Plus as another poster said, he may just not want to do it. Your energy levels decrease as you get older(for the majority of normal people - I am not talking your Jack Lalanne types or RAMA)and the stamina to work all day on a movie set of a physical production would be severely curtailled.

There's also a huge difference between playing a character for two acts of a movie and being the centrepiece of the entire production. He might not even have been up for that kind of effort then, as even Ian McKellen said a decade ago that the amount of work he had to do on the first three movies was extremely taxing on himself.

I'm seriously hoping they use some real bears as opposed to just CGI ones. I mean, they can use all the usual digital magic to intersperse or resize the bears, but they'll look better if at least some of them are actually the real thing.
