The Hobbit movies

The Hobbit movies are in limbo because of financial problems with MGM. Do you think that another studio will buy out MGM in time? Also; who would you want to see play Bilbo Baggins? Any other thoughts on the Hobbit movies are welcome as well.

Very funny Gaith. Here are my choices for the actors whom could play Bilbo. David Tennant(Dr. Who), Ricky Gervais(The Office),and Simon Pegg. But ppplleeeaaasee no Rowan Attkinson!!

Frankly, I see no reason why the original actor can't play Bilbo again.

The questions should be: who will play Thorin, or Smaug, or Bard (the older veteran warrior of Dale), or Balin, or Radaghast (the Brown Wizard)--or the Elvenking of Mirkwood.

I'm crossing my fingers for Russel Crowe as Bard, and Patrick Stewart either as the Elvenking or as the voice of the king of the Eagles....

Frankly I thought the idea of turning the book into two movies was a terrible idea. Given that LoTR managed to miss great chunks of the book and still managed to make it butt-numbingly drawn out, logic tells me that the two film strategy for The Hobbit was purely for financial reasons and bugger all to do with artistic considerations.

The only place they could reasonably divide The Hobbit, I suspect, would be to end the first one with the death of Smaug, and draw out the lead-up to the Battle of Five Armies. It suspect the second movie will have a lot of padding.

Oh, I'm expecting that they want to shoehorn a lot of new made-up stuff about Gandalf, Radagast, and the necromancer of Dol Guldur (Sauron) in there.

Yea, I was under the impression they were actually going to show the whole White Council storyline instead of just having Gandalf throw out a few lines.

Ian Holm is a bit too old to play Bilbo's younger self in The Hobbit.

Isn't it a plot point that he hasn't aged since The Hobbit? Now, I haven't seen Holm recently, but he can't have aged that much since 2003 or whenever.

In the LOTR books he is called "well preserved" and the impression is that while he has aged, he seems to have aged slowly.

Ian Holm is too old to play a "hobbit in his prime" for The Hobbit.

Here's another story on how a potential actor's strike Down Under could screw over The Hobbit:

Get the feeling this production is just jinxed from the start?

I hate to say it, but I think Jackson would have been better off making The Hobbit at the same time he did the LOTR movies or immediately after Return of the King was done. Certainly in terms of cast members I think he waited too long.

I do think at the end of the day they'll end up rethinking the (unnecessary) plan to make 2 movies out of it and do it all as one 3-hour film.

I'm pretty sure if PJ went straight into 'The Hobbit' right after RotK, he'd have worked himself into an early grave by now. Even now he appears unwilling to take the director's chair unless he absolutely has to to get the films done and I can't blame him.

As for the union dispute, there's a lengthy statement from Jackson on TORn, which in a nutshell says that this is basically the Aussie actors union trying to co-opt the NZ market and may result in this film moving to Eastern Europe and make other productions unwilling to invest in NZ as a shooting location in the future. They picked the right time and target since MGM is in no shape to play silly buggers.

They actually started filming in October 1999 - ELEVEN years ago!

I work doing physio with older people and I can tell you the difference between late 60's and 80 can see MAJOR deterioration of joints and atrophying of musculature.

Plus as another poster said, he may just not want to do it. Your energy levels decrease as you get older(for the majority of normal people - I am not talking your Jack Lalanne types or RAMA)and the stamina to work all day on a movie set of a physical production would be severely curtailled.

I just hope PJ will keep the film to a reasonable length or insert a pee break into the film. I like to kick back and watch a movie with a drink and a snack, but my poor bladder suffered through his movies. lol
