THE HOBBIT (2012/2013): News, Rumors, Pics Till Release

Oh lordy. An Elven Lee Pace?

I am going to DIE from all the hotness (and adorableness of Martin Freeman as Bilbo).

Unrelated? You've... actually read it, right?

Yep. Aside from continually having to check the glossary to remember which Elf group it's talking about, I quite enjoyed it. As someone who likes Ancient mythology, I thought it was cool for that. But ancient mythology is usually best in an omniscient narrative form. Movies put you in the center of the action.

I'll admit unrelated was not the best choice of words. I meant unconnected. Separated vignettes do not add up to a cohesive movie structure.

Weaving finally confirmed as Elrond (source theonering.net):

“Hugo Weaving will reprise his role as Elrond the elf for the two-part Hobbit movie now being shot in Wellington. The Hobbit spokeswoman Melissa Booth confirmed that Weaving would feature in Jackson’s 3-D prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.”

It's about time!

No kidding, right? You would have thought he would have been one of the first to be confirmed. Oh, well, now we can sleep soundly knowing we'll see Mr Smith returning to Middle-Earth.

Stephen Fry has been cast as The Master of Laketown:

Navigating around the Hollywood press-release protocol, Peter Jackson announced via Facebook that he has cast Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown. From Jackson’s comments it sounds like he and Fry are still working on the “Dambusters” film. “In addition to his writing skills, he’s a terrific actor and will create a very memorable “Master” for us.”

He also announces, “The Master’s conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage.” And, in the “biggest” casting announcement so far (or probably ever) Conan Stevens, a mountain of a man who plays “The Mountain that Rides,” in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” series, will play an orc named Dennis Azog. He was of course the starter of the war between the goblins (orcs) and dwarves and lived in Moria. By casting Stevens, a giant stunt actor, it probably means we can absolutely count on background in the conflict between dwarves and orcs so that by the time the action at The Lonely Mountain comes, we will know and feel the long history of hatred between the races. (On a personal note, this enters into my wildest dreams territory!) You can read the whole of Jackson’s Facebook update right here. He also details the shooting schedule which is pretty insightful.

I have to say this is unexpected but exciting news. I love Fry in everything he does and I look forward to seeing him in Middle-Earth even if the role is small.

Dammit! Every time I check TORn they never have any big news to report.

Stephen Fry's awesome, I think he'll do a good job as the Master of Laketown. I've only ever seen Stevens in Game of Thrones, but he definitely has the physical presence to play an orc-king.

TORN is part of my daily reading cycle with comics, this board, GallifreyBase, and Facebook. Nothing gets past me unless I don't have the time to get online. :D

:guffaw:Dennis Azog? Uh, I don't think so...

who will be playing an Orc called Azog (Orcs are never called Roger or Dennis for some strange reason).

In the actual article, the name 'Dennis' is crossed out. I think whoever wrote the article (or the casting announcement) was just having a bit of fun.

More casting news!

Tweeted first by BBC Entertainment Reporter Lizo (here), apparently Bilbo Baggins, aka Martin Freeman, has let slip that fellow ‘Sherlock’ actor Benedict Cumberbatch has a role in The Hobbit. Seems like a good pick for casting, but what role will he play? Share your thoughts in our comments, discussion board and on facebook! (Personally, I think he looks rather Elven. But his name is so Hobbitish!)

Let the speculation begin!

I agree with the writer that Cumberbatch looks Elven. Talk, skinny and pale. Whatever role he has, I just hope he shares at least one scene with Freeman. :D

Saw that a short while ago while reading news on Sherlock's BAFTA wins. it's brilliant news, and I agree, they need to have at least one scene together.
