^ That's not what he's saying.

How many everyday words can you think of (in American English) that have an "ah" sound without an "r" following it? Certain people pronounce the "a" in "potato" and "tomato" that way, but that's non-standard.

And words like "chutzpah", "huzzah" and "shah" aren't really used in everyday speech or writing.

Why is the "a" pronounced differently in "part" vs. "pat"? Because of the consonants following the vowel, even though in certain varieties of English, that "r" would be silent.

Here's a question: do UK English speakers get the "dah-lek" pronunciation from looking at the spelling of the word, or do they know to say it that way because that's the way the word is said aloud on the show?

To me, it looks like "dale" with a "k" at the end, so that would affect my pronunciation of the letter "a" if I wasn't familiar with Doctor Who.

Halt. Malt. Chalk. Talk.
Who is John Galt?

Not all of us talk like we're from Boston. They can't even pronounce 'car' correctly.

Alrighty then, how about words that don't have an "lt" or "lk" consonant cluster after the "a"?

But that doesn't really have anything to do with the consonant so much as it does the "E" following the consonant. Adding an "E" after the consonant changes the pronunciation of the vowel before the consonant.

dark vs. dare vs. Darek

The "R" isn't the problem. The "E" is the problem. Because English is dumb. :p

I don't understand why British English is so opposed to the letter "R."
Except for the southwest of England. They love their "R"s.
I bet that's where the pirates arrrr from.

Did you hear about the pirate who walked into a bar with a steering wheel in his pants?

The bartender said, "Hey mate, you know you got a steering wheel in your pants?"
And the pirate said, "Arrrrr! It's drivin' me nuts!"

Also, on topic (well, on the derailed topic), I've never heard of an American pronouncing it "day-lek", when I was very little I thought it was "Dar-lek", specifically because I was compensating for the Doctor's English accent and assuming he was dropping the r.

<hear it in "Michael Cain, working class accent">

I learned a bit of the hipster lexicon.

Clues You Are a Hipster

» You graduated from a liberal arts school whose football team hasn't won a game since the Reagan administration.

» You frequently use the term "post-modern" (or its commonly used variation "PoMo") as an adjective, noun, and verb.

» You carry a shoulder-strap messenger bag and have at one time or another worn a pair of horn-rimmed or Elvis Costello-style glasses.

» You have one Republican friend who you always describe as being your "one Republican friend."

» Your hair looks best unwashed and you position your head on your pillow at night in a way that will really maximize your cowlicks.

I can't figure out whether I'm a Cherohonkee or a Food Court Druid...

That's not hipster - too 80s. It's more like Late Yuppie.

Hipsters don't bother me unless they're literally bothering me about something. I've been called a hipster before, because I play the ukulele and wear the glasses they like to wear, but the ukulele is because I want to play the ukulele, it's a sweet, quiet instrument. I wear these glasses because when I got them 5 years ago they were the cheapest frames of the bunch.

As for the rest of my clothes, I'm a nerd who has no strong sense of fashion, and so I apparently drift in and out of hipster concepts without realizing it. I shop at the Goodwill and Salvation Army stores because they're dirt cheap, and I still believe paying $25 for a pair of blue jeans is insane.

My beard exists as it does because I can't be arsed to shave all of the time.

Also, I'd love to carry a messenger bag because my wallet makes me lean to the left, and it hurts to sit on it. I wish guys could carry purses without being ostracized (especially around here) because it would be so nice not to have to sit on a brick every time.

I do occasionally use the term "postmodern" but I never abbreviate it to "PoMo." Way too twee.

Not quite sure what a messenger bag is but I did have a satchel bag I took around for several years, it was very convenient to have.

It got a little to worn down and I don't carry nearly as much with me anymore. It just needs a few repairs and it's good to go again I think.
