The 'hate Star Trek V' bandwagon.

Of course we don't. But each new Trek production is also an artifact of its time, and TOS didn't have "terrible effects". They were state-of-the-art. But state-of-the-art in the 60s.

Nothing about ST V's effects was state-of-the-art.

But the effects are not good nowadays, no? Does this mean that we must cast the whole series aside?

I see no problem with the effects in Star Trek V. At least they are not a guy suspending a plastic model on visible string.

They might as well have been. Couldn't have been much less convincing.

And for the record the TOS Enterprise filming miniature was 11 ft. long--hardly something that could be hung on a string.

You don't seem to understand me. A case of crossed wires. Strings, even. I am not questioning the effects in TOS. I love TOS.

I am not the bad guy here. Please do not try to paint me as a villain.

:)

I don't think you're a villain, though you are exhibiting a disturbing degree of paranoia.

STV is a mediocre-to-bad film only marginally redeemed by some good character work. Whatever potential it had was brought down by nonsensical writing, inept directing, and laughable production values.

In your opinion, of course!

I simply do not like the Star Trek V fans to be disregarded and looked down upon as some sort of diseased group. Perhaps I do get a little uptight and guarded about my love for the movie but my passion cannot be repressed.

No one here is treated poorly for liking STV. Feigning persecution does a disservice to people who are genuinely oppressed.

It just feels like the weight of the anti Star Trek V crowd is crushing me. Perhaps I expected more people to come forward. Declare themselves. Sadly, this has not happened.

:sigh:

Where is this anti STV crowd that's "crushing" you? Several people here have given their opinions and none of them are "THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER AND ANYONE WHO LIKES IT IS A MONSTER!"

Maybe don't worry so much about other people not liking something that you like.

Most people don't give a damn if you like the movie or not. It's not an issue that makes people pick up their pitchforks.

I have always felt a sense of subtle, simmering disgust from other fans. Of course, you will claim that I am 'paranoid and reading too much into things' - many people have - but ever since leaving the theater in 1989 and liking the movie I have noticed that other peoples faces were not as enthused as mine and this has left me as to wondering why?

I see nothing wrong with the movie and it genuinely mystifies me as to the contempt that it generates.

If liking STV is the worst thing anyone can say about you, maybe you should consider yourself lucky.

Of the TOS based films TMP and TWOK had the best f/x. After that it was a noticeable slip in quality with TFF being the most obvious.

There are some interesting ideas in TFF and it had an aspirational story within it, but a lot of poor decisions as well as other not-so-good ideas undermined what could have been a much better film. They had a decent budget, but it doesn't show on the screen.

I don't find it a chore to watch TFF, but I do find it disappointing because there's stuff added to it that serves no purpose and what good is present is not used to good and full effect.

So Hans, how surprised are you that nobody here seems to mind the fact that you like the movie?

Most people don't like it, but it's been a few decades. People aren't gonna get mad. :p

But STIV and VI are full of things that serve no purpose. Cheap humor for humors sake. Spock's 'the hell ' addiction and Kirk kicking the creature in the 'regions' are prime examples.

I consider both IV and VI to be the weak links in the series. Both have a grasping at straws 'What can we do in this movie?' feel to them. VI feels like the biggest cheat. An episode of Columbo in space. Lazy writing.

They are not going to display contempt on a message board. It will be a hidden disgust. For common decency's sake.

I would love to be wrong about this, of course.

So, you are convinced a bunch of people secretly hate everyone who likes STV, but they won't openly admit it.

I'm pretty sure that is textbook paranoia.

Wait, weren't you saying they're the evil majority hive mind? Why would they not pounce on you now hidden by the internet's anonymity.
