Other than the Fart Jokes, this was a great episode. I really loved how they actually convinced Shawn to come around. Considering this angle to the character, it kind of changes how he was written in the past. He's always been an interesting character on this series, but I think they made him even more interesting with that reveal.

Two things from the podcast episode for this one:

    1) Timothy Olyphant was wearing the actual Raylan Givens stenson.

    2) There were multiple takes of Jason playing around with the End-of-the-World thingy that got increasingly silly to the point where Manny Jacinto actually dropped it and it broke into nine or so pieces. The entire cast remained in character for the moment and reacted in various degrees of horror and fear, with Maya Rudolph walking around, clapping and saying "I'm a mom and I knew that was going to happen!" Obviously that take was never going to be used but I really hope they release it in some form because it sounds hilarious.

    It's forking back, baby!

It was a strong episode as well, making it even sadder that the series is ending so soon. I would love to see a Disco Janet spin-off at some point.

Seeing an assertive Chidi really had me cheering as well.

    Very funny episode.

I get the idea that it is unfair to punish someone forever without a chance of redemption but should there be any limit on how many times a bad person can "retake the test"? At what point does the system basically say "ok, we gave you like a million chances at redemption and you have not made any improvement so you go to the bad place now."? Or is a bad person who does not want to change, basically stuck in the fake good place, forever doomed to "take a test" that they are never going to pass?

The show takes a rather light and tame view of "bad people". Sure, our main characters have flaws. They can tell lies, or be selfish or self-absorbed. The worst was probably Brent who was an outright narcissist and misogynist. But that's about the worst of it. In fact, it presents all humans this way, that our environment and circumstances make us jerks but deep down, people are not all that bad. Certainly, in this context, I think the new system works very well. If people are basically good but do little bad things because of circumstances, then it makes sense to give them chances to improve and be redeem rather than toss them in the Bad Place forever and ever. But I don't think the system is designed to really address the problem of real evil, like child rapists, serial killers, genocidal dictators or just plain psychopaths who are born that way.

Yeah, I hope they have a solution for that too so it’s not implied Hitler gets a chance to get in the Good Place.

If Hitler really did become an okay guy on his 10,000th try, does he get to escape consequences the same as the jerk who cut you off in traffic?

    Exactly!!

I think they should combine the 2 plans. The first plan had some good ideas. So, I would propose 3 Places, A Bad Place, a Medium Place and a Good Place. The Hitlers of the world who get a huge negative score because of truly evil actions, go straight to the Bad Place. People with a small negative score or small positive score go to the Medium Place and get a chance to improve. If they improve, they can move up to the Good Place. And finally, the people who were absolute saints on Earth and die with a huge positive score, go straight to the Good Place.

I was so excited that Bell was on the podcast this week. I know she was insanely busy with her Disney + show, Good Place and of course Frozen 2 (And various other things) but it wouldn't be a good final season of the podcast if she couldn't appear. It was such a great conversation too, especially revealing the line that teared up Ted Danson and how some of it was cut. I love Jacinto's delivery of his lines.

This was a great return to The Good Place.
I like how they're basing their new afterlife on what happened to the main characters. I didn't expect their experiences to be such a direct influence on the new system.
Seeing all of the different Janet's voids was fun, Disco Janet and Bad Janet were the best.
I've only seen a couple episodes of Justified back when it first started, but I still got a kick out of Timothy Olyphant's appearance.
    I'm loving more confident Chidi.
Jason playing with the clicker and everyone's reactions to him was hilarious.

The interesting thing about Hitler is was he as evil as he was because he was so much worst than other racist and bigots or was his evil enhanced by the power he got in order to carryout his hatred or even have that power elevate it. Would Hitler be the most evil person ever for example if he never got power and he spent his life working as a waiter or something.
I wonder if they will look at the issue in terms of how much evil is within a person and how much of is it created by our environment. Also if you, like I tend to think it's mixture of nature vs nurture then where is the line in terms of how much responsibility goes to the individual as opposed to society.

That's what interesting about giving people a test in the fake good place. They can set up a perfect environment and see if the person is still evil or not. If the environment is good and the person is still evil, then you know the evil was innate and not from the environment. In this, case, the person won't change no matter how many tests you give them, and they should go to the Bad Place. On the other hand, if the evil person becomes less evil or actually becomes good in the good environment, then you know that it was the environment making them evil and it was not innate. These people will probably improve and eventually go to the Good Place.

I agree to a point that somebody's behavior is a product of both nature and nurture. Or I might make it more precise as "Nature, expressed through nurture".

But you can't totally take away somebody's responsibility for their own options, especially when you go beyond just things that make someone feel bad and get into things that directly and clearly physically harm them, for motives that are strictly based on malice.

Maybe if Hitler didn't have so much power he wouldn't have been able to cause so much death, but he sought out power. And maybe if the Nazi who works at Starbucks was in charge of Germany, he would have tried to just throw the Jews out of the country instead of slaughtering them. Or some other less extreme solution.

For every person who's had a bad upbringing and then murdered someone, there are ten people who had an equally bad upbringing and made a different choice. Maybe they cursed at me when I walked by them on the street cause they interpreted some kind of disrespect, but they chose not to go any further than that. Some things are worthy of redemption, some things are just not, regardless of circumstances.

I’m curious how the last 3 episodes are going to go. They could have ended it on this deal. The fact 3 episodes remain imply something else goes wrong with just as high stakes.

After this episode things just seem “Done” which means no way they are. Maybe someone finds a way to actually hurt the judge? Or maybe Sean finds another sneaky way to subvert the new system? Or maybe the Judge tries to send the main 4 to the Good Place but not Michael and they try to do sneaky stuff to get him in too?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sean and the other demons got up to some sort of shenanigans before the end.

I hope we get a happy ending with our main characters actually entering the real Good Place for good this time. They certainly earned it.

I would have just pointed out to the judge, that there would be no Timothy Olyphant if she wiped away humanity problem solved.

They did that. (Although they also made it sound like everything, including Olyphant, would eventually come back the same way, but she'd still have to wait a billion years for him.)
