The Good Place Season 2

Well it was fun while it lasted but the Jags are out. Still looking forward to the final two episodes of the season.

Poor Eleanor. She passes her unselfishness test and goes to hell anyway because she was unselfish enough to agree to the all or nothing rule.

I've really enjoyed the direction that the show has gone this season, though, like others, I'm not sure where it's going to end up.

Shawn had a line in last night's episode that basically scoffed at the concept of fairness, a sentiment, I think, encapsulates the entire premise of the show.

From what we've seen of these characters actually lives, it's kind of hard to imagine that they all deserve the same fate as genocidal dictators or serial rapists. Eleanor mentioned this back when the concept of the Medium Place was introduced and asked why more people don't end up there.

Honestly, I think that's where the show is heading. I think they're going to try to take down the system or at least realign it into something more equitable.

Also, Maximum Derek!

Those tests were great, each one was perfect for the characters.
The Judge was definitely not at all what I was expecting, but I should have know that would happen since going against expectations is one the things this show is best at.
I loved the bit with the burrito, I actually had the thought about it being The Judge right as Jason said it.
That was not the outcome I was expecting, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I assume Michael will make an appeal to the judge as their advocate. Since Michael is an architect and clearly likes these characters, maybe the judge will sentence the characters to live in a new neighborhood designed by Michael just for them? The characters will then get to live in their own version of the Good Place.

I also wonder if maybe our characters will eventually convince the higher ups that the entire Good/Bad scoring system should be revamped since it is clearly flawed for determining who gets to go to the Good Place.

I got a theory we might see the characters return to earth, maybe as ghosts. In fact one thing I am curious about is what is the time period for current day earth on the show. The "Bad Place" experiment was recycled so many times that it can't possibly still be 2018 from the character's point of view. Plus how do you see living people in on the show such as how Fergie from the "Black Eyed Peas was in one of those rooms. Also they need to get Blake Bortles to do a guest spot or cameo on the show and present him to be as innocently dumb as Jason.

I could maybe see that happening either at the very, very end of the show or as a short arc, but definitely not as a long term thing. The whole point of the show is that the characters are in the afterlife, so I can't really see them taking them out of that afterlife.

I'm pretty sure it's set in the modern day. Pretty much all of the tech we've seen has been modern.
I am wondering how much time we've covered since the show started though. I don't remember ever actually getting any references to exactly how much time it's been since the characters first appear in "The Good Place". I'm assuming the 800+ resets must have taken quite a while.

. I'm pretty sure they were just artificial recreations The Judge made for the test. She created a Chidi that was almost indistinguishable from the real thing, so I'm pretty sure she could probably do the same for people like Tahani's parents or Fergie. It's also worth keeping in mind that we never actually anyone besides Tahani's parents, so there's really no way to know for sure if they or recreations of them, were there.
Also they need to get Blake Bortles to do a guest spot or cameo on the show and present him to be as innocently dumb as Jason.
That would be hilarious.

That good Janet reveal denied us the Janet fart.

So only 1 episode left this season? is it going to be a good place/bad place cliffhanger?

Time has no meaning in the afterlife. Unless the writers want it to, obviously. But with the power on display, it's entirely plausible the entire sequence of events of the show takes place in the exact same single second, or that every second in the Neighborhood was longer than the lifespan of the entire galaxy.

But the people in the rooms were certainly reproductions. Why would a judge have the authority to pull people out of their appointed afterlife like that for an unauthorized test?

The show has been teasing with the idea that people had on Earth might have had the potential to become good. The is the exact Mindy Sinclair situation, she died just as she was becoming good. Only this idea of posthumous redemption is dangerous for the bad place, if our heroes get in because they got better after death then they need to give everyone a chance.

I agree this theme of renegotiating the entire system is going to come up.

Just realized I forgot to post the description of tonight's episode.
Somewhere Else:
In the Season 2 finale, Micheal tries to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Other than the one episode they really did get tortured and roasted, this show is beaming with positivity. I'm really intrigued where this series will go in season 3. Also Ted Danson behind the Bar gave me so many nostalgic feels. Nice call back to Cheers.

Great episode on so many levels.

I liked that Michael raised my point about the scoring system being fundamentally unfair.

Giving the characters a second chance on Earth is a really interesting direction for the show. The characters are no longer in the after life so we get to see the real characters living on Earth. And we now get to explore this alternate timeline of what they would do on Earth if they had not died. It also makes me think that maybe the show was not really about the after life per se but more about characters having a near death experience and changing their life around. This episode definitely puts a different spin on the show's premise.

It was great to see Eleanor making changes in her life and trying to be good. It was also fantastic to see Eleanor meeting Chidi in real life.

Yes, seeing Ted Danson behind the bar was a nice touch.

I continue to like the philosophical questions that the show posed. This episode posed some good questions of why people do good deeds, is it only to get a reward?

I suspect that all the characters will eventually make it into the real Good Place either in the series finale or sooner.

It is even possible that the characters could make it into the real Good Place at the end of this season from how things are progressing and next season would be about their adventures in the real Good Place. I could see the writers doing something with the real Good Place not being what we expected and the characters having to deal with that in some way.

It seems like they're setting up Michael to become a trainer and/or tester for bad people with potential. That could mean anything from taking over "The Bad Place" entirely to emphasize rehabilitation, or it could mean running a new 'Place' for determining who would warrant sending back to Earth for more testing (or be given a 'neighborhood' designed for such testing). The show seems to be emphasizing that some people just need the right influences to be their best selves, so I imagine some of the analysis would go toward figuring out which combinations of individuals would be most likely to help each other become better people.

Good point. I think this episode really illustrated this. Chidi, Eleanor, Jason, and Tahani are good influences on each other in contrast to the people in Eleanor's life on Earth that were bad influences on her. In fact, watching the roommate scenes in this episode, I kept thinking that Eleanor really needs some new friends, who will be a better influence for her.

That struck me too. Your friends have a big influence on your life and it was so sad seeing Eleanor fall back to her bad ways.

In a way I wish this episode could have been an hour to see them all wake up back on Earth and how they adjust. I was a bit surprised they just focused on Eleanor .

I suspect they might devote each episode to each character. So this week was Eleanor, maybe next week will rewind and show us what happened to Chidi when he averted death and then the next episode will show us Tahani and the next, Jason.

Longer than next week I think:(
Wasn't this week the season finale?
