And I don't understand the perception that Whittaker didn't. I thought she made a strong impression right off the bat. I'm completely sold on her as the Doctor.
I respectfully disagree. The material was there but I didn't feel like Whittaker allowed herself to be wrapped by the character and explore her own take on it a lot. She's not quite there yet, and I think her second series will prove me right.

You know in the scene where the Rag Monsters of Fatal Death were reading the Doctor's thoughts they should have tried to squeeze in a "No not the mind probe!" from someone.

So far, I'm loving it. Two episodes in, very little technobabble, no universe-ending calamities...just the Doctor and her friends and ADVENTURE!!
I have to admit, I wasn't so sure about Jodie Whittakers casting, but now I'm sold. Can't wait to see the rest!

This episode and Rosa was filmed in South Africa. Wow...... They really are going all out for budget this year.
As a simpleton can someone tell me why? I get you might need to film the desert scenes from the prior episode somewhere with deserts but why film an American town in south africa? Do they have similar architecture to fifties america?

I believe I read it was easier to find suitable architecture there than anywhere remaining in the US. But if they're going to do location filming abroad on two episodes, it makes sense to find a single country where they can do both episodes. South Africa may have offered the best combination of locations. Or maybe it offered the best economic incentives, usually a major reason for filmmakers to choose a given filming location.

If it was done in the US, it would probably have been on a backlot somewhere rather than on location. It could be done but few places outside Los Angeles have the ability or the space to do something that broadly.

So a bit of a recap of my feelings. I've only seen a a handful of the classics; a smattering from different eras of the show. I really only got into it in college; back in 2005 with Chris Eccelston. For me, 10 was the absolute best Doctor of the new era, with 9 and 11 basically tied. They both had their strengths and weaknesses, but series 5 was really good. Series 6 was the beginning of Moffat's downfall. The Doctor more and more relied on complicated plots, complicated companions, and too much technobabble and for gods sake, how many times have we saved the universe already??
The Bad Wolf arc was great - it was pretty mysterious but wasn't so blatantly weird. The "Missy" arc, frankly, sucked.
Asylum of the Daleks: Good (except for the stupid romantic subplot between Rory and Amy).
The Dead Are Really Cyberman: A story by Missy: Terrible. I stopped watching aside from the christmas specials after that.
Now 12 is gone, a fantastic actor but without enough meat to make it work, and enter 13, stage right.
The exuberance of 9 & 10, the determination to avoid bloodshed, willing to sacrifice herself to save a stranger, and making friends with some new folk. Not just convenient companions for five minutes, but friends she can love and celebrate and mourn. I wish we'd seen more of Yas, who seems to be channeling a bit of Martha, curious, kind and soft spoken, down to earth.
So far, I really love this new Doctor Who. Jodie just nails it, iMO.
