The frontpage for ST day 2023 at startrek.com does not have Kirk nor Spock in the banner

But I guess the goal is always to promote the new stuff, it is ultimately marketing.
Agreed, it's primarily about promoting the new content.

Which explains the (relatively) prominent inclusion of Georgiou, since her Section 31 movie is still due to be released. All five front and center people are from shows either currently running, or in the case of Picard, very recently concluded, with a spinoff on the possible horizon.

Georgiou isn't that weird to me because she's a captain, I know in the old days for these kinds of "franchise wide" promotions they'd always just show the 4-5 captains which would have been a simpler route to go here.

From a design perspective, the weird inclusion is actually Seven on the left (from the time travel story, without Borg implants, no less). Otherwise, everyone from Pike left would be an original series era person, and everyone to the right of Pike would be a Next Generation era person. But yesterday was Seven of Nine day, so I guess it makes sense.

Hadn't thought of that. I guess the only non-captains on this image are Uhura and that character from Lower Decks--I haven't watched Lower Decks, but I'm pretty sure she's not a captain. Still, I'm glad to see Uhura getting love and promotion, since she's an original character that I've found to be either overlooked or misunderstood by many people outside the most dedicated fan community.

The selections are a snapshot of mostly what's going on now, a little of where it all began, and some highlights in-between. But mostly what's going on now, recently, or upcoming. With so many series, some stuff's going to start being left out, as time marches on.

  • Nichelle Nichols passed away. So, TOS Uhura makes sense. Also, TOS representation.
  • Pike, Burnham, Picard, and Mariner are obvious as the stars of their respective series. SNW front-and-center because SNW is the flavor of the month.
  • VOY Janeway is them having their cake and eating it too. She's doubling as '90s Trek representation and Prodigy. They don't have animated Janeway since Paramount+ took off PRO.
  • Georgiou because Michelle Yeoh won an Academy Award and, whether you like it or not, the S31 TV Movie was greenlit.
  • Seven because of Picard and, whether some of you like it or not, there's a push for Legacy that even Akiva Goldsman supports. So, I see this as a nod.
  • Sisko, I'm guessing '90s Trek representation and maybe they want to work in more DS9. Without going into specifics, they've already started to in small ways.
  • Then you have the TOS Enterprise as a nod to where it all began; the Enterprise-D, Defiant, and Voyager as nod to '90s Trek, and the Discovery as a nod to now.

There you have it. Spock's not in it, but they can have him some other time. They put the TOS spotlight on Uhura this year. It looks like Discovery will have 2024 all to itself, but 2025 will be a big SNW year. So we might get to see Spock on a banner then.

As far as Kirk? Anson Mount is the star of SNW, not Paul Wesley. Then there's William Shatner. As far as I know, the Shat has either shat on New Trek even though he hasn't seen it, or he's been civil at best. He was the most cordial when he told Paul Wesley congratulations. So I'm not getting the sense that the relationship between William Shatner and Kurtzman Trek is anything too buddy-buddy.

When SNW starts ending, Kirk becomes Captain, and Spock becomes First Officer, they'll make them prominent in these banners.
Sums it up nicely.

Yes, that's pretty much it. This is a marketing push, and they will focus on what's current, with brief representation from the past. 'Tis all, No insult intended.

They should have Riker. Frakes has worked on every show except TOS, TAS and maybe Prodigy.

It seems weird (and it is), but it actually is a 100% logical, safe marketing choice:

Whom should they put there for Kirk & Spock?
Shatner & Nimoy? To piss off their new stars Paul Wesley & Ethan Peck, marking them as "not real"?
Wesley & Peck? To piss off all the originalists, purists, and old fans?
Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto? To piss off just everybody?

No, better to avoid that discussion and put only the most safe & popular characters there. And Uhura is pushed to be part of the core TOS team, from how popular Nichols made that small part, to how her role was extended in JJTrek to now SNW, more than McCoy, whose more an old dude now.

The real crime is not representing all Trek (ENT, TNG, TOS movies), and having no logic at all apparent, except for "avoid controversy at all costs".

Kirk and Spock have been on countless images, and are forever a permanent part of the Trek universe. It's okay not to feature them once in a while.

So is Martin Luther King Jr, but you don't see him omitted in MLK day. This is an outrage.
