Spoilers The Flash - Season 8 Discussion Thread

Have they explained anywhere why they've gone back to Tom Cavanagh playing him instead of Matt Letscher?
It seemed like they had been pretty consistently sticking with Letscher, but now he's suddenly been back to Cavanagh his last few appearances.

Not really. Letscher only played Thawne in a handful of early Flash episodes (2 each in seasons 1 & 2 and in "Flashpoint" at the start of season 3), and then in season 2 of Legends of Tomorrow. He was never more than an occasional guest star on The Flash, while Tom Cavanagh has been a series regular for most of its run. So when they brought Thawne back in Crisis on Earth-X, it was just simpler to go back to using Cavanagh, since he was already in the cast at the time. And they've just stuck with it ever since, presumably because Cavanagh's version of Thawne has more resonance with The Flash's characters, and probably because Letscher has moved on to other things.

If Anything, Matt should get some time on "And Just like That..." because he played Daddy on the Carrie Diaries.

Oh, I was thinking Letscher had been on The Flash a lot more than that.

The original plan when the series started was that “Harrison Wells” was just an alias that Eobard Thawne created while stuck living in the past. There was no real Wells. Tom Cavanagh became interested in the part when the producers revealed the plan that he was really the big villain, The Reverse Flash.

The idea that Thawne stole the life and appearance of Harrison Wells did not happen until later in the first season.

Matt Letsher did a good job the few times he played the character. But really RF is Cavanagh’s character. Has been from the beginning.

Before this series the same writers had a script for a feature film version of The Flash that never was made. But many of the basic ideas were in place but in a condensed form. Without a long term mystery of the identity of who the Reverse Flash was, the movie script had Barry’s Star Labs mentor being named Eobard Thawne. With his secret revealed by the end of the movie.

Cool. Let’s get to 10

While I will happily watch more seasons, at this point I wouldn't be that disappointed if the show did end soon.

Not only do I want to go back to season 1.

I want to see Nora meet Nora from season 5, when she went to collect stuff from Thawn, and when Barry went back season 1 to get the tachyon enhancer from Thawn. Or deal with the time line splitting when that tidal wave did and did not destroy the city.

This could be fun.

A shorter season order might be good for the show (assuming they don't do Gustin-less episodes). I haven't been watching regularly as it just meanders too much now. I might have it on in the background or not watch at all because it's not very engaging.

Those hoping the show will be canceled will be disappointed…. Looks like they are close to signing Grant for another year.

This show is far perfect but they made some corrections lately and want it to continue.

I'll be impressed if they can sustain that momentum through the season. Armageddon was an epic event, which is different than a regular Flash episode. The issue with this series typically is the strong start but weak finish.

I'm surprised he only agreed to one season and 15 episodes. This is a golden opportunity to cash-in. He has decades to pursue whatever pet projects he wants, but the chance of earning this type of money again is low.

He's been doing the show a long time. He's earned enough to retire if he wants to. I am sure he is feeling like he wants to do something else by this point.

Well, maybe it will be a more-focused, shorter season like Arrow's final season. That being said, I hope if it is the final season, that decision is made plenty ahead of time. I thought indications a year ago were that Candice Patton wanted to move on - I can't imagine them trying to find a way to write Iris out like Arrow did with Felicity.

Gustin has an estimated net worth of $5 million. At his new salary, he has an opportunity to roughly double his net worth in one full season and triple it in two seasons. Actors dream about lasting long enough on a television show to reach that type of payday.
