The Flash - Season 1

I thought Grant Gustin was too scrawny to play Barry Allen, but heck, I guess it works for him. Even a black Iris West works.

So who was the villain - Weather Wizard? I liked the Grodd reference.

Black Iris works especially for this version...so they "brother-sister" thing looks less creepy for when they eventually get together.

Missed this the first time I watched, but just realized that it is Barry who saves himself when he is a kid at the very beginning. Is that the way it was in Rebirth?

Actually, rewatching that part last night...it was a yellow blur that took young Barry away...and there were red in addition to yellow blurs. So either Reverse Flash or Kid FLash take away Barry for some reason/ And we don't know how Nora died...hit really fast? Stabbed? Suffocated? It seems purposeful, but maybe an accident?

I wonder if they'll ever upgrade it. Would doing so contradict the newspaper shot? Not necessarily. It could have been an old photo... He could have gotten the old suit out of mothballs...

The costume in the newspaper photo isn't the same one he wears in the "present." It looks glossier, redder, and more seamless, and the contours of the mask and chin guard are subtly different. Compare:

Ok even without all the effects that looks pretty cool. Love seeing people in actual superhero costumes fighting on a TV series again. And the yellow/black costume looks great as well.

Not sure I like or see the need to add black to Zooms outfit, except to say oooohh he wears black he is a bad guy. But still nice to see him.

Just noticed in the one pic Zoom is wearing a bright gold ring. Compressed outfit hiding place from the future?

I don't think that it's a yellow/black costume?

It looks look the boots want to be red, but they've been blackened by something, so the rest of the black areas in the suit are also not supposed to be black either?

It's dirty?

I might say smoke, but then I might say oil, but if it's temporal degradation I am going to toss my toys.

I didn't watch the pilot on Tuesday, but I was able to catch it last night.
I really enjoyed it. I like the cast, and the writing was good.
I thought the speed effects were pretty cool, and the Weather stuff was good too.
I'm glad they actually have Det. West learning about Barry now instead of dragging it out forever.

Dragged out forever? No. But at least they should've saved the discovery for the end of the season. As it was, they set up a tension between Barry and Joe and then resolved it almost instantaneously. And that seems like a waste of potential.

I tend to disagree. I always feel that tension based on misunderstanding or something that one character doesn't know always comes off as more annoying than an interesting, because you know the two characters would actually agree with each other if things were out in the open and you know that it'll get to that point anyway. It just feels manufactured. I much prefer tension based on legitimate disagreements or opposing goals. If there is going to be tension between Barry and Joe I'd rather it be Joe knowing about Barry's powers and disagreeing with how he's using them in general or maybe a blow up between a particular action that he takes. Something that tells us more about the characters than Joe only feels this way because he doesn't know the whole truth...

But this mean that after Wally gets Flashed up, the Detective is going the throw Barry against a wall and have a serious conversation.

I think it's enough that Barry already has to keep this secret from Iris and all the other detectives he works with. And plus it's a nice change of pace from the usual dynamic we see in superhero stories.

Hmm. That's actually a very good point. Really, as a rule, I prefer it if people close to the hero are in on the secret, so that they can have a more integral role than just "the person I have to lie to all the time." The best thing that ever happened to Aunt May in Spider-Man was when J. Michael Straczynski had her discover that Peter was Spidey and prove that she was far stronger and far better at coping with it than he'd ever given her credit for.

But in this case, there are just so many characters that are in on Barry's secret from the word go that it seems excessive to add one more in the very same episode.

Well, I hope so. At this point, though, we don't know what will happen between the characters. I'm just concerned it'll make things too easy for Barry, leave him with too few obstacles to overcome.

Heck, I wouldn't have minded if Barry, Caitlin, and Cisco had been operating without Wells's knowledge. Make it more of a secret club operating under the nose of the authority figures, rather than being guided by the authority figure himself. But I guess that's not feasible given what we learned about Wells in the tag scene. I noted in my second viewing that he kept suddenly showing up out of nowhere at just the right moment, suggesting that he knew exactly when important things were going to happen -- and maybe that he teleported in? Or... arrived at superspeed?
