The Flags of AU Earth

Someone on Sci Fi Meshes.com requested an AU flag of England. That request is proving quite the challenge, and so far I'm not totally happy with any of my ideas, but here is the first of them:

Another request from a member on Sci Fi Meshes... he wanted to see the flag of a Chinese-American unified superpower.

From your choice of colours it looks like you're working on a flag on Great Britain, as opposed to one for England.

Like main national flags, the design of the Union Flag is no accident: It combines St George's Cross, the flag of England and St. Andrew's Saltire, the flag of Scotland, with a distorted St. Patrick's saltire, representing Ireland and later Northern Ireland.

The wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Flag gives a more detailed history (with illustrations) along with some other ideas that were considered.

Since you're unhappy with your initial attempt perhaps you could look into alternative arrangements of the basic cross and two saltires.

I am very much aware of the meaning behind the Union Jack, and I used that wiki page for reference.

I am trying to keep the key elements of the Union Jack, without making it a copy of the Union Jack.

That's pretty neat. But again, thinking about what it would be if it were made of cloth, I wonder about having all the colors meet at a common "vanishing point." I imagine the seems would be too bulky on a smallish flag so it might be better to have them come together but not quite exactly together. Imagine lopping off the extreme left 1/16 or so of the total width of the German flag here and see what I mean. It would be the same idea, just more easily manufactured. Unless in the AU everyone actually prints their flags instead of sewing them together from different colors of cloth. You know, whatever.

I don't know what kind of alternate history you've got laid out for Europe in general, or Germany in particular, but why not use the older black-red-white colour scheme instead of the current black-red-gold/yellow?

Because I wanted to include ALL colors of the German flag, including the white, but I like the current flag's look the best. So I came up with this.

The German flag, IMO, is VERY hard to improve... and this is pretty much the only attempt I made that I felt looked good.

The German flag actually works quite well considering the history of the version used in our universe. White as a remnant of all those centuries of Roman/Imperial past, with the modern colors first used during the 1848 Revolution on top and slowly becoming the dominant pattern.

BTW: Great take on the Australian flag! Though considering its sea-faring past of the colonial era I kinda feel sorry the Southern Cross didn't make the cut.

Okay... I'm not even sure if I'll use this, but I was just playing around, and came up with this as a possible flag for the Canadian Free Hold.

Interestingly, you're not too far off from one of the actual proposals for the Canadian flag, now known as the "Pearson Pennant":

As well, I feel compelled to point out that the white is already supposed to symbolize French-Canada. King George V declared red and white the colours of Canada, with the red taken from the St. George's cross, and the white from the French royal emblem.

^ This is pretty awesome. It looks very natural given the history of the flag, and I especially like the inclusion of the emblem of the Republic (which I think is quite inspired, with the Star of Italy and the cogwheel).

I'm kind of a vexillology buff (well, more of a idle interest, but still), and I really love your work. It shows both historical research and a firm grasp of what makes a good flag. So, kudos to you for your work, and thanks for sharing it with us.

(and btw, it should be "Bella, Italia!" ;))

Aye, well balla means dance, and since you said you were jumping up and down, I was trying to say you should dance, lol. But thanks for your kind words... I'm glad you liked it.

Ah, I missed the reference!

(that's the deal with Italian, lots of identical words: balla could mean "dance", "wobble", "ball", "falsehood", "bale"...)

Here is one I have wanted to do for a while, but I only today found a canon source for it... the flag of the Kingdom of Gath, from the NBC TV series Kings.
