The Final Season - Mysteries

What is also interesting about the ghost Christian (and this might just be a mistake on the writers part) is that he can travel through time, so, if he can and he is actually the MIB or Jacob, then they can also travel through time.
Maybe when the island moved and the Losties started time jumping, MIB went with them in Christian form wherever they went. It doesn't explain how he then ended up in 2007 when Sawyer and the other went back to 1974, though.
Maybe he did end in 1974 with Sawyer and company, but took the long way back to 2007?

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but I'd like to see the destruction of the statue. I have no idea if it's remotely important, but I'm currently watching "Live Together, Die Alone," and Sayid states that he doesn't know which is more disquieting, the fact that the rest of the statue is missing, or the fact that is only has four toes.

I wasn't interested in seeing the statue's destruction until that one scene with Ben and Sun last season. "What happened to the rest of the statue?" "I don't know. It was like that when I got here." "You honestly expect me to believe that?" "Probably not."

You know, I'm not one of those detail oriented sci-fi fans who need every minutae of a given universe explained, but adds nothing to it (The fact that the Trek novels Probe and Origin Of Species sold well shows they're out there). So if things like the Numbers, the nature of Jacob and MIB and the two skeletons in the cave are never explained, I won't lose any sleep. Some big things (like what the island is, for example) do need to explained. I have a feeling that once that is revealed, other things will fall into place. But I'm afraid that when all is said and done, a number of fans will hate the ending no matter what. It's in our nature.

I don't care if the real significance of the numbers and their recurrence is never explained, but it would be nice to know why a voice was broadcasting them from the radio tower.

^^^^Once again, I think that's going to happen once the big questions are revealed. I think that at the end of the show, there will a ton of dots that will be connected and moments where I'll slap my head and think "So that's why...". Can't wait. :)

Do you really think so? Do you think that there are any "big answers" that could/will connect all the dots?

I can't imagine any one answer to any of the big question that would suddenly connect all the dots. Not unless it's something crazy like the MIB is Satan, Jacob is God and the Island is Heaven/the Garden of Eden/etc... And Jacob as "God" is looking for someone worthy enough to take his place, and Satan just wants to escape and run amok on across the earth.

For the most part I think it will be small answers to individual questions.

"What's the Deal with Jacob and the MIB?" -- Two long ago arrivals who came or were brought to the Island. MIB was seduced by the power, Jacob fought to protect the Island from the MIB and any who would use the "power" for evil. Now they are trapped in a "game" with rules they don't even understand. MIB can't kill Jacob directly, MIB can't leave the Island unless he gets rid of Jacob and the other candidates.

"Why are there on the Island?" -- Jacob manipulated events to bring them there to find a replacement.

"How did Jacob do that?" -- He's been alive for thousands of years and has mystical powers to alter fate, but not free will. He can "arrange" for people to come to the island, but can't make them stay, or act nice or choose to take his place. They have to make that choice themselves.

"Who is the MIB?" -- Some evil person who also ended up on the island with Jacob a long time ago, he tried to gain/use the Island's power but got stuck/trapped there by the "rules" of the Island (or by Jacob). Has to "finish the game" to escape the Island.

"What is the Black Smoke" -- The MIB died a long time ago, but is still on the island. His "ghost"/"life-force" can create the Smoke Monster and other ghosts. He uses these forms to try and manipulate other people on the Island to his own end and help make his escape possible.

"What's with Ben & Widmore" -- Both are puppets of the MIB and Jacob, fighting a war amongst themselves over who they believe should be Jacob's successor and control the Island.

"What is the Island?" -- This is the big one. It could be a mystical land, a'la Atlantis that has remained hidden from the real world for centuries, it could be "The Garden of Eden" where God first created man, etc... But whatever it is, I doubt it will be fully explained more then that.

That's kind of how I think the answers will come out. I can't see there being one big, slap your head because suddenly everything falls into place, answer. It's not the "Sixth Sense", I doubt there will be a big twist that will suddenly make everything make sense. Unless they go with the original ideas that the did all die in the crash and are in purgatory fighting to get out, or that it is a dream, or something stupid like that.

Some good questions and answers/theories.

One that hasn't been raised though. I'm wondering why Jacob touched Locke after he was pushed out of that building by his father. Jacob is giving Smokie his "loophole" and "vessel" by allowing Locke to live.

I do hope we get the answers to everything. I feel like John Locke when he was murdered by Benry, "I don't understand".

After last night, I have altered my excitement level for future episodes and just try to enjoy the ride. I am convinced we are going to get zero answers and new questions all the way up until the series finale (where we may not even get any answers then).

After The Lighthouse my fiancee had an interesting theory that could answer this:

We see how the numbers correspond with the Lostie's names since they're points on a compass. Turn the mirrors to 23 and you can see Sawyer's life, turn it to 4 and you can see Locke's etc. By watching various people's lives, Jacob noticed something special about the people who correspond to the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. This is where things get a little supernatural, which is perfectly within Lost's storytelling rules so far. Jacob takes those numbers and transmits them from the radio tower, calling the people who belong to the numbers. His act of calling people through these compass numbers influences the fabric of reality, making these numbers pop up everywhere and even have an influence on the lottery and Hurley's luck.

Going back to the lighthouse, if the mirror shows things at each compass degree, then there must be 359 candidates, most of whom are crossed out. We don't see their lives anymore since they're dead or disqualified, so the mirror was largely just a normal mirror. Though, I wonder what happens if the mirror is pointed to 305 degrees, the safe heading away from the Island. Maybe nothing...but this series has sure had a thing for compasses and compass bearings lately.

And I wonder who number 108 is? They wern't on the roof of the cave as far as we saw, but their number is what you get when you add all the other numbers together. Is he/she a "super" candidate?

Number 108 name was Sheridan, he's going to tell the Vorlons (Jacob) and the Shadows (MIB) to leave this island and never return.

^^I'm sure he'll say it in a much grander speechifying way, though. :D

I'm really hoping it's not going to end up a "God v. Satan" thing, but I'm pretty sure the writers are smarter than that. Then again, I totally bought into BSG's finale...so what do I know.
