On the domestic front,
Star Trek held steady at the #5 position, as pretty much everyone knew it would; it doesn't look to be facing any major competition in the near future, so it should stay in that spot for a good while.
Worldwide,
Star Trek slipped into the #7 position, being surpassed, as it already had on the domestic list, by
The Hangover. Pixar's
Up also continues to climb the chart; now that it is opening in new markets fairly regularly, I wouldn't be surprised to see it make its way into the Top 5 in the coming weeks.
If anyone's curious about the figures for this weekend's major release,
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, here they are:
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Domestic: $54,713,046 / 56.0%
+ Foreign: $43,035,972 / 44.0%
= Worldwide: $97,749,018
Pretty solid debut, especially for an August release (4th-highest ever in the month, actually), but nowhere near
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen numbers. Not as good as
Trek's opening weekend either. Anyway, I expect it'll be on both these lists next week.
Oh yes, and
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince should soon overtake
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's title as the highest-grossing film worldwide of 2009. I'm glad to see that -- if
Transformers: ROTF emerged as the global box office champ for the year, I would have wept for our species.
