The Final Ongoing Star Trek Box Office Thread

ParticleMan said:
I wonder, with the fact that the Oscars are expanding the Best Picture noms to 10, if we might possibly see a brief return of the film to theaters around Oscar season? Dark Knight came back out for a couple of weeks and it didn't even get nominated for Best Picture. If Trek somehow squeaks into that top 10, might Paramount give it another go to raise back some exposure during Oscar voting?

Honestly, I'd be very surprised to see that happen, but I suppose you never know.

Thursday September 24th saw another little increase in daily gross: $10,161. That's up 12.2% from Wednesday. Per screen average was $79.

Domestic total: $257,638,255.

So Harry Potter's debut at my local IMAX attracted 16 people with 15 minutes remaining before the show.

Star Trek? A paltry 50.

Unbelievable.

Saw it again on thursday and the cinema had around 50 people there and I heard alot of good comments.

I wonder how many people are going over and over again.

Enough, obviously. IMAX numbers have to be judged somewhat differently from regular venues because of their unique status and far fewer numbers but it seems TREK has been doing very, very impressive numbers all things considered.

Domestic: $257,638,255
International: $126,611,663

Global: $384,249,918

Where did you get those updated international numbers from?
Because that is a different number than BoxOfficeMojo.

That extra money makes a difference on the Worldwide rank we passed Raiders then, and only 90k until we take out "Happy Feet" for spot 118. Which is the very last movement up it can make on both the domestic & worldwide box office.

Go Trek

Doubtlessly there's a contingent that's going multiple times...

(like me)

But word of mouth is such that perhaps newbies are being brought into the fold too. I think the next one's gonna be front-loaded like a mother, and will set IMAX records...

Oh, tonight's final score: HP 27, ST 27.

:)

At this point most people know it'll be on DVD and BluRay in about six weeks. So the whole "lets go see it in a big dark room" charm is wearing off.

Six weeks until the DVD! Somehow, it feels further away than that. Hm, I wonder if I can hold out until Christmas? My family will probably be hard-pressed to think of stuff to get me (as usual), and I'm sure they're aware that this would definitely be something I'd enjoy. I don't know... I guess I'll wait and see how badly I'm feeling the itch for it in November.

As for this weekend, the $65,000 is nice, and would put Trek's domestic total at around $257,703,000. Per screen average was $730 -- not a bad drop after last weekend's $778.

All in all, it wasn't a great weekend at the box office though. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs dominated for the second week in a row. The two new sci-fi offerings didn't fare too well: the Bruce Willis-starring Surrogates opened with about $15 million, which isn't great considering its $80 million budget; Pandorum, the spooky-spaceship thriller, had even worse luck, taking in only about $4.4 million (its budget is around $40 million). The two films placed 2nd and 6th respectively. The weekend's other major release, the remake of Fame, fell somewhere in between, earning a little over $10 million to place 3rd (which isn't too bad, given its $18 million budget).

Get two copies! Buy yourself the cheap one in November, and let your family buy you one with all the extras for Christmas :techman:

SURROGATES seems to be getting very mixed reviews from critics and audiences. Ill probably hold back until it comes out on DVD.

Final number for the weekend was $65,844. Per screen average was $740, so it did a bit better than the early estimates predicted.

Domestic total: $257,704,099.

(Oh, and that's not a bad suggestion, trampledamage, but I'm usually not one to double-dip with DVDs... maybe I'll rent it in November though.)

SEVEN WEEKS to the day until the movie hits DVD and BluRay! Just 49 short days and counting...:p
