The Enterprise NX-01 appreciation thread

The only real change besides the bolt on parts was that they relocated this part to the secondary hull. But other than that, the NX-01 was unchanged, besides the secondary hull and extra support pylons.
I don't know about "extra support pylons". It looks to me like the whole crossbar was replaced with two longer sections going down to the secondary hull. The saucer extensions that held the crossbar would also have been reconfigured - possible parts replaced? The nacelles have changes too. It may be just a paint job, but the glowing blue parts on the outer sides have been replaced by a red Federation stripe. You'd assume the glowy bit had some practical function, so the fact it's gone would indicate (in-world) the whole thing has been replaced.

It's not real clear from most of the images of the refit, but you can tell from the released models. The old center Engineering section that used to sit on the crossbar is still there. It sits at the top rear of the new secondary hull right where the struts come in. They did not so much remove the crossbar as drop it down into a deeper V and build the new secondary hull onto the bottom and forward of the old. It's hard to explain. This image shows both Eaglemoss versions side by side from a top view that makes it clear.

And yes the nacelles on the refit have more paneling along the sides so the blue interior no longer shows through. I always assumed it reflected that the nacelles, or at least the guts had been replaced as part of the refit. I think the logical explanation would be that during the initial voyages of the NX-01 they learned the lessons that eventually led to Matt Jeffries design aesthetics. Mainly that it should be possible to reach and maintain all critical portions of the ship, such as the engines, without resulting in going outside. In the original NX-01 Nacelles those glowy blue areas were the engines, parts of which were open to space. The nacelles were just the mountings and housings for them. By the refit those have been walled in. The logical reason being it makes them safer and easier to maintain in flight.

Griffey, you said you actually have the refit conversion kit, so perhaps you can explain: Is this a kit to convert a "standard" model of the NX-01? Do you modify any original parts, or just replace them? If so, how much of the original gets swapped out?

My model is a resin conversion kit. You take the Polar Lights regular NX-01 and make the conversion. So in assembling it you see the major changes. Which are pretty basic. You do slice off the crossbar at the impulse pylons. There are two replacement lower struts that go in instead to deepen the V. The result is the entire warp struts are now straight. A straight line from the nacelles to the Warp core. They no longer turn inwards as they cross the impulse pylons. The kit has a new secondary hull, and the neck piece. The neck just attaches to the saucer. Some details there make it just fall into place. The only other major change is it has replacement side panels for the warp nacelles, that replace the trans clear parts. The only cuts or major modifications to the base model are those two slices severing the crossbar.

Polar Lights has now released a full injection molded NX-01 kit.

^ Thank you so much, that answers my question!
It also looks like there is a new paint job? The bronze colour seems to have gone.

The above pic is a marketing photo the two Eagelmoss die casts. The smaller being the regular 3" NX-01 and the larger being their new Special Release larger Refit. It looks like they just used a different tone of bronze on the refit. More of a burnt titanium rather than the more commonly seen goldish bronze. I think that is more an artistic interpretation than a color change in the ship itself. I think the only major paint changes or differences were the addition of the swooshes and red stripping on the warp nacelles and the red piping on portions of that upper saucer structure.

I have always gotten the impression that Drexxler's plan for the refit was to be two stages. The first being the physical refit with the new secondary hull. Plus a later repaint into what we now view as Federation livery. The grey/white with NCC-XXX as the markings. There is art of both paint schemes floating around out there. But it is unknown what the intent for them was.

i loved the ship hated they could seem to decide where the weapons fire from
the aft torpedoes in particular

The Polar Lights 1/1000 build it yourself plastic kit of the refit should already be out. The Eaglemoss "Special Issue" Die Cast should be out any time now.

In a vacuum it looks great, on its won without any previous show to compare it to.

But in context I thought it looked too sleek and modern when compared to the original USS Enterprise from TOS.

The NX class, in both original version and the refit with secondary hull, is one of the best designs in Star Trek ever, one of the most 'real' looking ships.

While I think it might look a tad too advanced, I have to admit that NX-01 is a really beautiful ship; one of the best looking Trek ships for sure. I also love all the little retro elements. Only part I think looks bad is the deflector dish, it looks like they just stretched Connie's dish on a 3d program. I think someone agreed as it is fixed it on Columbia, that shape looks much better.

The refit is stupid and hideous and I'm really glad it never made on screen.
