The Enterprise Finally opens a can of whoop....

If only Abrams had given the Kelvin-sequence the orderly-ness of a naval battle like this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y91-wE5vkuA&feature=channel

That was a nice WW II battle scene, but I for one, am happy that we got what we got. A battle is chaos, I see nothing wrong in depicting it that way.

The Kelvin sequence it absolutely perfect.
That Yamato battle is only slightly less chaotic than the Kelvin battle.

The point I was trying to make: The argument that the Kelvin-sequence was too chaotic, too un-orderly is just bullshit.

Naval battles are (and are portrayed as) total chaos and so it this starship battle.

Thanks for the clarification. Don't get me wrong, I've been watching Star Trek since '72, so I'm not in the 'kewl fx' camp, but I've been waiting for a more realistic depiction of a space battle since the movies began. The closest they had gotten to getting right was TWOK in the nebula. I was really pleased with what JJ's team put up on screen. Very real, very messy.

Edit: I guess I should also give some credit to Nemesis, the space battle was the only thing I found in that movie to be even remotely worth while.

Funny how you guys compare ground combat to ship to ship combat. :wtf:

Yeah, I should have used the rows of soldiers that used to advance, step by step, on each other while shooting their guns or wielding their swords.

That's how space combat has been portrayed on Trek in the great majority of episodes and movies, hasn't it?

I enjoyed the attempt to "speed it up" and make it more dynamic than the standard, okay, time to ram the ship kind of thing... in slow motion.

Space combat has been portrayed like submarine or air combat most of the time.

The most awesome display of massive Enterprise ownage ever was seeing the Enterprise-D open up with literally EVERY weapon she had, on the Borg Cube, in "Best of Both Worlds".

The absolute lamest display of utter suckage, was the Enterprise-D's utterly pathetic SINGLE return phaser shot, at the Duras sisters' BOP, in orbit of Veridian III, in "Generations". But I place ALL blame for that on Riker's stupidity. ;)

I thought that the Kelvin's full phaser spread was much more impressive and interesting then the Enterprise's. The all weapons blazing sequence is not very common in trek. The only recent example of this (before XI) was in Nemesis when Picard orders a full phaser spread. That was pretty cool too.

I always preferred "Balance of Terror" fighting.
Though I'm more for seeing "To Boldy Go Where No One Has Gone Before" type of stuff myself. :p

Yeah, but the way that battle ends is f*#king badass!

Something I can appreciate with XI's battle scenes: all weapons firing, but the ships are still lumbering giants that take some time to turn. To me that implies that even with unbelievable firepower, you'd still have to be quite tactical about your maneuvers and weapon placements, again harkening back to TWOK and TNG, and a far cry from the trend of more dynamic ships like the Defiant, Voyager, and Enterprise-E.

Technically we saw more "guns blazing" in TWOK, First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis. Two of them sucked royally. I leave it to you to figure out which.

Completely with you mate.

First Contact & Nemesis sucked.

Personally I thought the opening scene with the Kelvin was awesome, as was the 'debris field' of the ruined fleet at Vulcan. Scenes like those give a hint at the kind of space battles that could be acheived with modern sci-fi- lets hope JJ ups the ante for the next film.

I still keep thinking about a Wolf 359 movie. Bloody hell I would make that spectacular.

The Kelvin battle was some of the best ship battling in Trek. Unfortunately showing this at the beginning of the film left us expecting more to come later. alas not...

Couldn't agree more.

I remember my heart sinking when Kirk talked them out of rendezvouing with the rest of the fleet for a big battle. First Contact was the same: as soon as the Borg Cube exploded in the first ten minutes, it was all downhill from there :(

I have been a fan of Star Trek since I was knee high to a grass hopper... This was sometime between the release of Star Trek 2 & 3. I have always wanted to see the Enterprise open up with all it has. The closed thing we saw was in Star Trek VI, when the Torpedo hit the BOP, and the Enterprise and Excelsior start firing torpedos.

In this movie we finally see the Enterprise engaged with all guns blazing...

I don't think we "saw the Enterprise kick some ass" so much as we just saw some quick and random shots of laser beams flying out of the ship at ridiculous rates.

There's something to be said for the finesse and "romance" given to the battle scenes in TWK.

The battle scenes are one thing I didn't like about this movie, they were just sloppy. Like the opening scene with the Niranda and Kelvin. It was just a mess of laser-shots, noise, and torpedos. There was no logic or sense to it.

"laser beams flying out of the ship at ridiculous rates"
how was it a ridiculous rate it was probely set to rapid fire to take out the torpedos.

My biggest battle disappointment was when the Enterprise-E didn't reach Starfleet Battle Group Omega during the fight with the Scimitar in Nemesis. Or rather, when the battle group lost contact with the ship, they didn't come to her rescue (But the Romulans did. WTF, Starfleet? WTF?).

I think the Defiant can get away with whizzing all over the place.

I agree there, the Defiant was probably the size of the NX-01 and had enough power output to rival starships many times it's size to the point of tearing itself apart with it's own engines. You don't end up being that powered up and still act sluggishly.
