I thought the opening scene was excellent. As a new father, I can't stop thinking about it and wondering how I would have felt in those circumstances. Wonderfully portrayed... I can only imagine how it would feel to hear your son being born and knowing that you're not going to be there for him, but at the very least, you can make sure that he survives the immediate threat.
Star Trek is about many things. But as a new generation takes up the mantle and begins to render a new and, by its nature, inherently different Star Trek storyline, I think this is an apt beginning for James Kirk.
