The Elder Scrolls V in Production

I never got into Oblivion, but I'm a diehard Morrowind fan. With all the graphics extenders and plug-ins its better-looking than Oblivion anyway.

Me too. Oblivion's leveling system killed my first character and the remaining interest in the game. Morrowind I loved.

There are a few things I hope Elder Scrolls 5 "borrows" from the Dragon Age series.

Ah, gotcha, your wording just mixed me up. I thought you were thinking Tamriel was Cyrodiil or something, sorry. Yeah, I agree, I think TES5 is going to stay on Tamriel and we're going to see a new province as the setting. Skyrim could be cool. I don't think they'll do the Black Marsh.

Yeah, probably. Unconventional terrain like that would be counter-intuitive.

Skyrim has a lot of the traditional fantasy appeal, but I think they can make it completely unique though. The terrain is definitely easier to work with. Solstheim anyone?

Great news. I sunk probably 100 hours into Oblivion, and I'm about 60 hours into Fallout 3 right now. One thing you can say about these Bethesda RPGs, they certainly give you your money's worth when it comes to content.

What I love about both games is that you can complete ignore the main storylines if you want and just "live" in their worlds.

^ Agreed. I'm 30 hours into Fallout: New Vegas, and I've only done 2 of the main storyline missions. So much to explore, especially since I've heard the final story mission closes the game, like Fallout 3 before the Broken Steel DLC.

I'm at level 20 at the moment, and I'm thinking of leaving the story missions alone until I hit level 30.

Yeah, and you can spend +120 hours by doing just that if you so desire. Definitely good value.

Yeah, that's what I did with Morrowind. I made it a goal to explore the entire map. I don't think I even got halfway through...

Speaking of which, I have a better computer now, I guess I could reinstall it and waste tons and tons of hours again. It would just be competing with Minecraft now.

Pretty much what I did. But I still forget where things are. I'm going to take my current character through Thieves Guild, Hlaalu, Imperial Legion, Tribunal Temple, and Morag Tong all the way (or near enough) to the top before I even start the main quest missions.

How's the vampire stuff? I know you can become a vampire and join a vampire house but is it worth the trouble?

I did enjoy being a Werewolf. :p

I hope it isn't glitched like it is on the PS3 GOTY edition of Oblivion. I had to go through some bullshit rigmarole of changing the language of the game to German, completing the task, saving, then changing back to English in order to get the vampire cure to work. Lost all my progress on the Shivering Isles expansion as a result. Wasn't happy.

Yikes! That sounds horribly broken. I didn't know you could be a vampire in Oblivion, for that matter.

Yeah, you can contract vampirism by being bitten in your sleep in certain areas. The cure involves collecting a series of ingredients and taking them to a specific character, Mesilande, so she can brew up a cure. The problem is, when you deliver the final ingredient to her (Bloodgrass), she takes it, but the game doesn't register that she has it, so you have to go through all that messing around to get it to work.
It's something to do with the dialogue options; she won't acknowledge the word "bloodgrass" in English, but will when it's changed to the German "blutgras".

The workaround itself works fine for the cure, it just has the unfortunate side effect of annihilating your Shivering Isles progress, although you do get to keep any items you accquired there.

Here's the wiki page about it... http://oblivion.wikia.com/wiki/Vampire_Cure

All I'll say is, if anyone is going to play the GOTY edition on the PS3, make sure you obtain the cure before doing anything in the Shivering Isles.

Is this patched in the PC version, by chance?

ETA: Looks like you can just use the console to remove the vampirism bit from your character. That'll do it.

Oh yeah, the glitch is only present in the PS3 GOTY edition. The standard PS3 version, as well as both versions on the 360 and PC are fine. Bethesda know all about it, but have done nothing to patch it. In fact, unless I'm mistaken, it was Bethesda who came up with the German workaround.

I did uncover all of it, and believe me, it took me a loooooong time. I guess that's part of the reason why, in my memory, Vvardenfell felt a lot bigger than Cyrodiil does in Oblivion.

On the topic of Morrowind... I am ashamed to say, I never managed to join the Tribunal Temple - I was never able to complete the quest (it was either broken in some way or I was just too thick to figure it out ;)).

You get some huge stat increases, but everyone will hate you. For perspective, I once killed off all of Balmora and Ald Ruhn for fun. And after that NPCs would treat me about the same as they would a vampire.

Also there's the sun damage to worry about. To each his own, I prefer to opt out.

Is it at all possible to catch vampirism in Morrowind without any expansions? I bought the standard Xbox version and I'm not sure I want to upgrade to GOTY yet, and vamprism's one of the things that could make or break the decision.

I bought the the goty edition for the PC a few years ago, and I never installed any of the expansions, but I'm not entirely sure how different it is on a console, as the PC version allows you to select what you want to install.

I don't think you need the expansions to contract vampirism in Morrowind. That being said, it is worth upgrading to the GOTY edition of Morrowind anyways. You can probably find it for less than 10 bucks if you really wanted to.
