The Dreaded Dentists

Agreed. I had one of those "deep root cleanings" once and I don't think I'll ever do it again.

This is just unbelievable. Between braces that required some below-gum extractions, and really soft enamel and bad gums (thanks, Dad ...) I've had a lot of work done, and relatively NO PAIN.

I DO get nitrous for my cleanings. No big deal.

Shop around, do a little homework. Or just admit you have a low threshold for pain. Methinks a lot of finger pointing at dentists is because the patient has let things go so far that the first visit back requires a lot of work.

Don't wait. You can get systemic infections throughout your body by not taking care of your teeth. They're not a sovereign part of your body. They're connected to the rest of it and can greatly affect it.

I skipped a lot of dental visits because I was paying to make sure my kids got their dental care. There's only so much money to go around. As a father. my kids came first.

I didn't have to have a lot of dental work until I was up for my transplant and it took a month and over $8000 out of pocket. I killed my 401K before the market did.

I have to admit I never had any pain though. I confessed right up front that I was a coward when it came to dentists and the guy and the oral surgeon did all their work while I was under sedation.

That sucks about the money, but good that there was no pain.

I was always afraid of Dentists, until I met my DW's dentist. He is really good, asks questions and i never had any pain with him.

it reinforces the fear of dentists, I suppose, when you let things go to shit, and then try to get a lot of serious work all done at once. Hurts like hell (or you get sedated), but makes you feel good to be proven right, i guess? No different than ignoring warning lights on your car, funny noises and smoke, and then trying to get all the work on your car done at once.

And the "i only brush my teeth once a day" crowd? Pretty disgusting, glad we only know each other over the internet. I'd think that especially if you aren't seeing a dentist regularly, you'd spend the extra 2 minutes a day to brush well twice, but that's just me, I guess. To wait to brush more often until your front teeth are literally rotting out of your head is beyond understanding...

I've not been to the dentists in about 8 years and unfortunately i'm paying the price. I have a build up of plaque behind my bottom front teeth and it's started rotting and spreading around the rest of my teeth so I have no choice but to go to the dentist. I just signed up yesterday and got an appointment in 2 weeks and i'm scared. :( I hate the dentists with a passion, the thought of having them drill my teeth to put fillings in sends me into a panic attack. If they tell me I need fillings when they come to put them in i'll probably go ballistic :(.

Anybody else fear the dentists? well that's probably a retarded question, i'm sure everybody does.
When was the last time you visited?
Did you need fillings? Did it hurt?
How would you rate your teeth?

My teeth aren't bent of mishaped or even discolured, my only problem is the plaque build up at the bottom and the fact it's started to rot and spread, it's not too bad at the mo I suppose, i've seen worse but if I leave it the eventual outcome won't be pretty.
I probably should have gone a few months ago, now I fear I will pay the price. :(

I can never get over the five year hump say it is like a five year mission I go on AFD (away from dentist) but yep after about five years something tells me to see the dentist this last time turned out to be a really painful root canal thingy. ahhhhhhhh

My dentist is super hot and she's got a great rack that hangs right in front of my face when she's working.

I love my dentist.

Literally.

So in the middle of the root canal my dick got hard.. noticeably hard that is were the dentist and I stopped: and she felt "uncomfortable" continuing with the procedure and so did I - dag she was a fine fine dentist but now I guess I am going that five year mission again cause well.. I went back and the only reason I went back was in an emergency where the root canal was "not finished and now infected" ahhhhhhhhh yank that sucker out they did in two pieces ahhhhhhh.

I did not mind much cause now the road I live rt27 on is also the number to teeth in my mouth twenty seven .,,, so it is a kinda symmetry but letting go of the tooth was like letting go of life although it felt so so good after the tooth was gone..

(blah blah blah you people don't really notice what is written do you ., ?? wait this is the forum where english gets corrected aaaaaaammm - ok.)

As I said earlier in the thread, I put off going to the dentist for a long time (and paid the price, both literally and figuratively). But the whole "I only brush once a day" thing grosses me out. Not quite as gnarly as when someone says "Oh, I forgot to brush my teeth this morning", but it's up there. I avoided dentists for a long time, but I can't imagine avoiding my toothbrush. Even during my "hiatus" from the dentist, I always made sure I brushed at least 3 times a day.

My dentist used to use me for his interns  It wasn't my teeth were bad, it was the genetics.

I do wish they would invent something so they didn't have to stick a bloody needle in your gum to numb it.

I've been reasonably lucky with my teeth so far. I had a visit last month for cleaning and checkup after 4-6 years without going. For the most part I'm in good shape. I had plaque buildup but it was cleaned without incident. I had some gum recession which the dentist attributed to me brushing to hard and one of my wisdom teeth came in rather crooked but it doesn't warrant intervention. If I can remember I will try to get the cleanings done more frequently since it's hardly unpleasant. The hygienist I had recently was rather easy on the eyes.
