IMO, there is NOTHING uncool about Beyond.
I recently joined Epix, they have a TOS movie marathon on September 9th, i can't wait.
Epix is the perfect place for Trek fans .

What big budget film has done well this year that isn't an animated movie, or a comic book movie?

The movies that do well in theaters these days are movies that kids are interested in. That's not Star Trek.

I think adults are growing bored of big blockbuster movies. I think more adults are turning to television shows for their visual entertainment.

Its back on the IMAX in the UK for a final run I believe, thankfully I can see it twice more now. I saw it the first time in a shitty old cinema.

You seem to imply that Beyond isn't 'cool'. Beyond is a wonderfully entertaining film with great storytelling and excellent characterizations, not to mention fabulous visuals and extraordinary sound. Please elaborate why it isn't 'cool' or 'cool' enough.
I assume you're responding to Khan 2.0 as I was. Trek was coo in 2009 and 2013. I think Beyond will get good video buzz. But Paramount needs to market it better than it marketed the theater run.

I Agree but I don't know if it's that audiences are getting bored of blockbuster movies in general or if they're bored of the vast majority of them being bad movies. If you look at the summer's big blockbuster releases, most were critical duds and only Beyond got a majority of positive reviews. I think that's part of what hurt Beyond is that it came late in a summer where audiences had given up on seeing those big movies and opted for more family oriented films. For example Secret Life of Pets has been in theaters for almost two months and it still hasn't left the top 10.

I remember reading I think in Forbes that this summer is a lesson to studios can't just pump out these blockbusters, that they have to first and foremost make sure that the movie is a good and well executed stories. Part of the rationale for the watering down of scripts in Hollywood blockbusters is that studios want easy to follow stories with a lot of action that will be easier to translate for lucrative foreign markets.

Beyond isn't a bad movie, it isn't particular good either.

In what way does it stand out from other summer blockbuster movies? In no way at all. It's all rather ordinary. Not enough to keep people interested.

There's nothing special, nothing unique about it. Same old, same old.

Is Beyond the way to celebrate a franchise 50th anniversary? I don't think so.

People can say 'Nope' for all they want, but figures don't lie. This summer's boxoffice is actually up compared to last year...

Whether or not you liked Beyond yourself is a personal thing but Beyond did have some of best critical reviews of the summer for a big summer blockbuster. The movie was well received by critics.

I think the impact that critical response has on these big blockbuster movies is minimal. I think we've seen a fundamental shift in the consumer base for movies.

I'm 33 years old. I look at my peers, and none of them go to the movies unless it's to take their kids. When they watch a movie for their own pleasure, it's via a streaming service. Also, TV shows seem to be more appealing to people of my age group than movies.

Beyond got "generally favorable" reviews from critics. Nothing to get excited about.

I enjoyed the movie, but it's not great. It's just fine.

You make a good point. Beyond may have received good reviews and been liked by many of us, but there's nothing unique to it at all. I was thrilled with it mainly because it finally started feeling like the original series to me--much more so than any of these films since 1991. But does that make the film worth recommending to non-fans? I don't think so. I was just happy that the new film felt (for the most part) like he old show. Is that really a good achievement for a $180 million dollar film? I don't think so.

Star Trek films need to deliver something better, but I'm not nearly smart enough to imagine what that could be. I still think Trek is best served on TV.

How the fuck do we make a Star Trek movie for $90m?
You do what they do in TV shows. Make part of the show as cheaply as possible - a bottle show or near to it - and save the budget for later when you need it.

Start on the ship set with only the regular cast. Have them go somewhere, beam some down to an Earth like planet. Have them get in trouble. Have them deal with it while something happens on the ship.

So far, you've saved on expensive guest stars, used existing ship sets and natural environments. You haven't hired Idris Elba, spent a fortune on the Yorktown design and effects, the swarm, destroying the Enterprise and a huge planetary set, and you're still at about the same point of the film. Use plot and acting to get you there, then use the savings to pay for a more spectacular final act. It still doesn't need to be quite as over the top as Beyond.

Save even more by seeing which cast members would accept reduced salaries in exchange for % points...

Beyond was a love letter to TOS

I'm sorry ?

Beyond was (surprisingly, given that Pegg wrote it) stylistically identical to the previous two. No improvement whatsoever...

Unfortunately, Black Hole was a Star Wars knockoff, no need for Disney to screw around with it now that it can make billions with actual Star Wars.

You've got a point there, I guess. Still, they remade Pete's Dragon (from the same craptacular era of Disney prior to their 80s rebirth). I think more people remember The Black Hole than Pete's Dragon, and have that "gee whiz, if they had only executed better and not camped it up with cute robots" feeling about it. The only reason to remake Pete's Dragon is to kind of do another riff on E.T. or How to Train your Dragon.

Sigh. So torpedo a well - liked and well received movie that has made back its budget and more... because Trek is coming back to TV?
