After your comment, I did some research. Here is an article from Wikipedia on Filmmaking.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filmmaking

Star Trek XIV is in development. For a film to be green lighted, it will need to be financed. Do we know that the next sequel is receiving financial backing?

(I have heard many announcements in my life about sequels to films, only to learn that they have gone to development hell. So, for me, until I actually read or see proof, it is just talk.)
Chuckle.

Here we go again... so official press releases are just talk?

PARAMOUNT PICTURES, SKYDANCE AND BAD ROBOT
ANNOUNCE A FOURTH “STAR TREK” FILM

CHRIS PINE AND CAST TO BE JOINED BY CHRIS HEMSWORTH, WHO RETURNS TO THE BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE AS GEORGE KIRK

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 18, 2016) – Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage.

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.

Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “STAR TREK,” will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

The remaining cast is expected to return.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

There have been many films announced and then cancelled.

Although I believe Star Trek XIV won't be, it would certainly not be the first if it did happen.

The purpose of an announcment is two fold: demonstrate to investors that financing a film project was a wise investment and convince film goers into seeing the film (our film is so great, we are having a sequel). Which would you be more willing to do for a film in a franchise: see a film with an announced sequel or see a film with no accouncement of a sequel? The studios are banking on the average moviegoer being the former. It's psychological manipulation.

Remember Fant4stic? Didn't the studio announce a sequel, then change their minds some time later when it didn't do so well? Granted Beyond isn't the box office bomb that film was, but minds can change. In this case, I hope not.

Do you think there's any correlation between how Into Darkness has been recently received and how poorly Beyond has thus far done?

I don't think so. The hardcore fanbase is a small portion of the potential audience of a film. There's no "recently received" aspect either; it copped a backlash from portions of the fanbase at the time, and that certainly didn't hurt its longevity at the box office.

I think the answer is quite simple - Into Darkness was more appealing. Beyond is less well reviewed on critic and user scores alike, and the content of even positive reviews is often not very enticing to people who are not big fans of the show.

What else is really sizzling for Paramount right now?

When TPTB look around, it seems like Star Trek would be worth another shot. It's not as if Beyond has been a box office disaster like Nemesis. Not even close. Just seems like it would be a worthwhile investment. Change a few marketing strategies, time the release date more effectively, and give it another go.

Again -- what else are they hanging their hats on right now?

Another Transformers is coming out midway through next year, and Jack Reacher 2 is due this year.

*googles*

Heh. Baywatch, World War Z 2, XXX 3, Friday the 13th, and Ghost in the Shell are also due next year. It's a bit funny seeing so many 'development hell' movies coming out at once.

I suppose there are reasons to commission break-even movies. Keeping the studio ticking over, providing staff with something to do, maintaining the brand, tax breaks, the chance of an unexpected 'hit'...

I heard that many fans have chosen to boycott Star Trek:Beyond because of the lawsuit by CBS/Paramount against the fan film Axanar. Some people said that it would have an effect on the total domestic box office. Do you believe that?

I doubt those people would have gone to see it anyway with or without lawsuit.
Also, there's like twelve of them, so I don't think many is the appropriate adjective...

I don't think so. Axanar doesn't have that many supporters--although I'm one of them. So far Beyond is behind Into Darkness by over $230 million dollars according to Boxoffice Mojo. That seems kind of high because of the impact of a fan film from Kickstarter. It may have played a small part, but poor marketing probably is the biggest factor.

The truth is Beyond suffered from a lack of buzz due to a bad marketing campaign and entered theaters late in a summer where its become clear audiences are growing weary of the constant sequels and reboots.

Beyond is Paramount's best performing movie of 2016 so far by earning almost $70 million more than it's second best movie (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) of 2016. The only other big movie Paramount has for 2016 is Jack Reacher 2 and there is already worries around it. So the odds that ST4 will be cancelled still remain low.

Anti-Kelvin Trek and boycott groups on Facebook have 8,000 members maximum and about a dozen actively posting in their groups. 500,000 people went to see Star Trek Beyond in the US in evening and late showings on July 21st alone.

The boycott brigade are a teardrop in the ocean.

The marketing was terrible. I had so many friends, aware of the last two movies when they were being marketed, that had no idea there was even a new Trek movie out...at all! They needed to push the 50th anniversary in their marketing, they also needed to follow up the first teaser trailer more quickly than they did. There was no momentum, and that first trailer was rotten. It made me not want to see the movie at all. I'm glad the other trailers came along, because for me this has been the best of the Kelvin timeline movies.

The marketing campaign for Beyond was a bust. Most studios start heavily promoting their big tentpole movies at least 6 months before (Star Wars: The Force Awakens dropped their first teaser trailer a year before the movie was released).

Paramount released the controversial first trailer in December 2015 - regardless of your view of it truth is it wasn't particularly well received particularly within the fandom. Then there was nothing until the end of April which is insane. I was really nervous about the movie when I saw the first trailer and given the response, Paramount should have released a more serious style trailer very soon after to put fears to rest. To me, and others have said the same thing, it seems like Paramount until a few weeks before the movie came out seemed to be treating Beyond like it was a dud.

Interesting to note that in the last couple of weeks Paramount has begun making changes in domestic marketing department.

Do you think there's any correlation between how Into Darkness has been recently received and how poorly Beyond has thus far done? Even though Into Darkness holds slightly higher scores on Rotton Tomatos and Metacritic, it's commonly referred to by fans as inferior to Beyond.

I have a lot of issues with Into Darkness and almost didn't bother with Beyond in theatres because of it--even though I would have still bought the Blu-ray when it's released. I'm a TOS Trekkie, after all. However due to the positive response from fans on sites such as this, I decided to give Beyond a try and liked it so much that it's restored my hope in this film franchise. I even saw it twice.

For me these are the main two reasons for Beyond underperforming. Disappointment from STID that carried over and very bad marketing. I have not seen/heard any other probable reason.

Paramount is having a disastrous year. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Star Trek Beyond and now the Ben Hur flop. No wonder Viacom is selling its Paramount share.

I've got to throw in that despite it being liked on here, it really wasn't generally seen as being a great movie. Or even a particularly good one.

Ben Hur is a classic film, but this new version is awful. There's no comparing it with Beyond.
