The Doctor's tolerance of corrupt Companions

Is it me, but I think that as the Doctor went on, he became less tolerant of certain companions who became corrupted, and unforgiving of those who did not share a clean virtue, and yet tolerated those corrupt companions which pleased him in other ways?

I have some great examples.

Let's go back to the first one, Yataxa-Barbara..Power went to her head in Ancient Aztec Mexico

Turlough and his faithful following of the Dark Guardian

Yet, when Rose, who he must have admittedly had a crush on..liked that guy Adam from the Nevada desert, and tried to make his self rich with technology, the doctor wasn't as forgiving then, and kicked him out.

Maybe he was also cruel and unusually bitter towards Mickey because of the same interest he seemed to feel in rose, and just handled it badly.. but you can not say the doctor was ill equipped at emotions, or relationships, for he had a grand daughter and admittedly a wife on Gallifrey..

So what other examples of his tolerance towards companions does he exhibit?

I mean Rose did defy him on a number of occasions, however she was quickly forgiven in most cases..it would seem as long as a companion was attractive to the Doctor, then they were given a pass, as apposed to others who may threaten his ego, or a love interest?

That being said, there is no written rule stating that the Doctor has to be equitable to all whom he comes into contact with, nor treat everyone the same..even tho he is supposed to be an enlightened and superior being, his attitude at times and his value system is remarkably closer to that of a human, and heavily biased at times, more so then you would think..

Maybe that is why he chooses to be around them so much..

Well, Adam did get the port implanted in his head to access the computers, which then allowed the Editor to learn about the Doctor and Rose from Adam's memories. Things could have potentially gone south in what was already a very bad situation with Adam effectively endangering the Doctor and Rose just because he was greedy and wanted to bring advanced technology back to Earth and profit from it. So yeah, it stands to reason the Doctor wouldn't be as forgiving towards him as he would other companions who fell into power in ancient times or was being bitched around by the Black Guardian. Honestly, I'm pretty sure any incarnation of the Doctor would have kicked Adam out of the TARDIS after an incident like that.

you may be right there.. But then again the Doctor left behind Sarah Jane Smith, and then moved on without looking back. It would seem he has a lot of issues with companions. I mean he did seem very hurtfully lost without Ian and Barbara, but less as upset when Adric was killed, as we saw them get over his death pretty easily in the next episode.. tho, maybe there was already time going by there. Yet, I believed the implication was that next episode was a sort of eulogy and mourning period.. which abruptly ended pretty fast.

then there was Mickey..He was treated very badly by both 9 and 10..

2-3 seemed to like his companions more then any other, and had a more brotherly attitude to male companions, while it seemed like every companion that came after the Doctor was more interested in the females as friends, or friendlier to them then the male ones.. except Peri.. who got the business end of a choking..

I don't think Barbara was corrupted by power in The Aztecs. To me, her heart was always pure. She was trying to do good, but realized she couldn't change history. I don't think the Doctor ever viewed her as anything but trying to do something foolish.

Compared to Adam, who was being greedy throughout, it's night and day.

I've never seen the one with Vislor Turlough, though, so I can't comment on that.

The Doctor was very understanding of Turlough, even after knowing of his deal with the Black Guardian se allowed Turlough to travel with him. Addam though diserved his fte, he was selfish and really not much ofa companon and pretty much forgotten about.

Frankly, I liked that that action came back to bite the Doctor on the ass in Prisoners of Time. I didn't really like the execution of said story, but Adam honestly had a point; he had been seriously wronged by the Doctor and his life ruined.

Maybe he was also cruel and unusually bitter towards Mickey because of the same interest he seemed to feel in rose, and just handled it badly..

"Maybe"? The Doctor was an asshole to Mickey. Full stop. :)

Well, the Mikey we first meet is a bit of a coward and is unwilling to speak up for himself, but he changed as he went along and later earned the Doctor's respect. However the fourth Doctor did treat Harry like an idiot, but then he was an inbecile at times. ;)

but you can not say the doctor was ill equipped at emotions, or relationships, for he had a grand daughter and admittedly a wife on Gallifrey..

I know plenty of people who have spouses, children, and grandchildren, who are ill-equipped at emotions and relationships. Successful reproduction or having a marriage license is not evidence of being emotionally well-adjusted.

The opposite could be argued for the Brigadier after the whole Silurian thing. But I got the distinct impression that it was only because the TARDIS wasn't working that he got around to forgiving the Brig.

I just watched The Silurians then The Ambassadors of Death. He's not only disgusted at Lethbridge-Stewart post Silurians, he's started trying to get the TARDIS working again so he can leave. It's only because he can't get it working, and the whole Space Mission problems kick off, that they work together, and it's slipping into those tried and tested roles that get the two talking again.

We also have to consider that each new incarnation has a different personality, and perhaps has different tolerances for things that frustrate him. He is centuries old which could affect how he view things, his levels of tolerance. People today can be vey tolerate but eventually there comes a tipping point at which their tolerance runs out.

Very true, I mentioned Three, who forgave the Brig because he had to stick around, while Ten practically through Harriet Jones under a bus within seconds of a very similar decision. But then Ten was suffering under his belief of what he did at the end of the Time War as well, so was far less forgiving of that sort of action.

What was that line from School Reunion?

The Doctor: "I'm so old now. I used to have so much mercy. You get one warning. That was it."

Well maybe he knew Micky needed a kick up the arse to realise his potential :)

Ah Ten’s hypocrisy how I miss it.

“No second chances, I’m that kind of a man.”

Unless you’re the Master of course, or Davros, or the Cult of Skaro…but that’s it!

The Tenth Doctor was, indeed, far more merciful towards either people he knew and loved (the Master) or people he honestly thought could change (the Cult of Skaro) than people who'd only just met him and didn't seem to present the possibility of reform.

Well at that time he thought the Master was the only other surviving Time Lord.

There was the time the 11th Doctor nearly disowned Amy Pond in "The Beast Below" over her decision to keep the whale imprisoned. A decision Amy forgot making as soon as she made it due to the nature of the technology.

Yet the Doctor had no qualms of River shooting holes Silence aliens in the episode "Day of the Moon". Jack Harkness tried to use a gun to defend himself, Martha and the 10th Doctor during "Utopia" from the future kind. But 10th said don't you dare, and Jack relented.

So it really depends on the Doctor's incarnation and his mood atm.

To be more accurate, he had no problems with anyone shooting the Silence, given he helped devise a plan which involved Canton shooting a Silent in the gut, than record it...him?...begging to be put out of its/his misery. This was then transmitted around the world compelling everyone to kill the Silence on sight.

River was shooting in defense if I remember right. The Amy thing, she did what she thought was right. In the end she figured out what everyone else didn't (including the doctor, but then he was ticked off at the moment and not clear headed) that the whale showed up to help them. Though she didn't know that he would keep helping. She was also a brand new companion put on the spot and really what would you have done if you were in that situation.

well then it would seem the Doctor may have a bias against some companions but others with a pretty face, he seems to let do their thing..Like River vs Jack harkness..

Or Rose, versus Martha Jones.. (though I found Martha highly attractive)
