The Doctor's holographic family

As much as I regard the episode as a gratuitously maudlin tear-jerker, I would not mind some sort of follow-up, whether an actual sequel, or a subplot in something else, or even just as throwaway.

(I'm not a big fan of gratuitously maudlin tear-jerkers, even though I've actually written one myself, a short story about a kid dying of cancer. There's an episode of Emergency! that I try to avoid [it's the one in which a "boy who cried wolf" so many times that his mother was ignoring him finally did himself in by taking a lethal dose of a pesticide], and an episode of Quncy that I've never been able to watch a second time, [the one involving child abuse].)

Which novels are those?

The story in Protectors starts off following up on the mystery left behind from Twisted. The backstory for A Pocket Full of Lies begins with Shattered. They're not so much sequels as they are... spinoffs, I guess would be an appropriate word. The events are connected but its not really a continuation in the most obvious sense.

I have to admit, I was thinking the episode ended with him shutting off the program permanently.
