News The Disney+ (The New Streaming Service) Thread

I wonder why they don't put more Fox stuff on there... like the animated movie Anastasia seems like it would fit right in... And obviously the X-Men movies...
Well it's simply really. They are not going to treat this as if it were a library, where they put everything they own (that fits the family friendly brand) up on a permanent basis. Its being treated the same as every other pay tv channel channel that's owned by giant media corps. Content will be added in waves and rotated on and off every quarter as we're used to seeing.
Keeps a subscriber hooked in for longer periods than it would if folks could just walk in and watch the handful of titles they're interested in and leaving.

Disney+ has announced their May schedule (for the US at least) and it seems pretty big. They're adding a ton of content to the library. Even some old Fox movies. Lots of NatGeo shows being added, and Disney is pulling some old nature shows out of the vault too. It seems like a surprisingly good mix of both old stuff and newer stuff for kids. This may be their biggest monthly addition to the library yet.

(That said, 3 of the things listed for May were originally scheduled for April, and apparently got pushed back a month. So as always, take this schedule with a grain of salt. The Disney+ schedule is always open for changes.)

I probably won't be spending much time with The Big Fib, but Prop Culture actually looks interesting. At the very least I'll check out some of the episodes for some movies, but if it's any good, I may watch them all. Heck, if it's at all interesting, I may end up hoping they make a second season.

And yes, you're reading the title for the first episode of It's a Dog's Life correctly.

The fourth episode of Disney Gallery The Mandalorian seems to be the one that will further show the Stagecraft technology that allows them to project virtual backgrounds and proper lighting on actors while still indoors on a closed set. Hopefully it'll be cool.

We'll see how long that Pirates of the Caribbean movie lasts. Could be another one of those here today gone tomorrow situations. At this point it would actually be a surprise if it stayed on D+ for the next 20 years straight. And it might be a similar story with other recognizable movies like Homeward Bound, George of the Jungle, and John Carter. It wouldn't surprise me if they had contracts to go to some other service in the future. Though hopefully at least one or two of them will stick around permanently.

But either way, that's a pretty dang huge list for May.

The only way I could see stuff going to another service is if it's part of a preexisting contract, I just can't see them giving their stuff over to other services now that Disney+ is up and running, and has been a proven success.
I could see them pulling a D+ plus version of the old "Disney Vault" and putting stuff on and them pulling off, as a way to encourage people to watch it, or in the hopes that people will buy it if it isn't on there anymore.

But either way, that's a pretty dang huge list for May.
I should've double checked, because about half an hour before I posted this, as I was typing it all out, Disney+ announced that The Princess Bride is coming on May 1!!! Definitely an all time classic.

Dang it, no sign of Man In Space or Mars and Beyond. Hopefully they still randomly appear at some point over the next few weeks.

This week's new stuff (US version) :

mostly the same as the US, but they also added Onward and Dark Phoenix

You with, the digital release of TROS already behind us, and the dvd/bluray coming soon..... I had thought Disney+ would already have it, or at least announced a release date.

Disney+ like HBO (owned by a studio/media corp), will not release a brand new movie on pay tv during the initial dvd sales release window. Expect the same delay before it arrives on D+ as always with recent theatrical films. Usually 6 months after disc release, though that has been shrinking lately with some studios.
They won't post a date because it may deter some from buying the disc. :sigh:

Just realized: they forgot to mention the Disney Family Singalong that they added to D+ this week. How curious that Disney themselves didn't even mention it, not on any of their international lists.

For those in the UK how is Disney plus there? I know Sky TV has a lot of Disney content with marvel and star wars on their channels but I saw that it's possible to use online streaming platforms through sky too. Is disney plus one of them? Will disney content be reduced on SKY channels?

Disney+NL tweeted today that Rise Of Skywalker will be available on may 5th. Same day as bluray release I believe.

Sounds like most places will get it sometime between May 3-5.

From the bottom of that article:

In addition to new content offerings, Disney+ will also honor the artistry of Star Wars with a week-long concept art takeover on the service. Like a commemorative gallery, each film and series’ artwork will be updated on May 4th to feature its original concept paintings. From Star Wars: A New Hope to The Mandalorian, the updated art will feature work from celebrated artists such as the legendary Ralph McQuarrie and Academy Award-winning artist, author, and production designer, Doug Chiang. On the Disney+ home screen, the animated Star Wars brand tile, viewable on web and connected TV devices, gets upgraded with a new animation that honors the signature hyperspace jump.

Just read the news and came here to amend my post. Needless to say I'm shocked to see it made available so quickly. They must feel confident that disc sales/rentals won't be impacted severely by using it to boost subscriptions to Plus.

Huge list of new stuff on the US version this week, and they even seem to have forgotten One Day At Disney and Nature's Half Acre. (Though to partially make up for forgetting two titles, they listed Primal Survivor twice.)

I'm still waiting for a movie like Enchanted (Where it's a Disney movie but it's not streaming anywhere) to come to the service. I haven't really seen any good reason why it's not on the service yet.

The rights issues around that kind of stuff is so complicated that it's hard to guess why some stuff is on services and other stuff isn't.

Here's the video Disney posted that highlights all of their May schedule:

No sign of Disneyland Goes to the World's Fair unfortunately. It'll probably be pulled from the schedule just like Man In Space and Mars and Beyond were. Too bad, because I'd totally check out those old specials from the 1950's and 60's.

Good news: there's a brand new Pixar SparkShort coming on May 22, called Out. Definitely the big surprise in that video.

Other than that, it's pretty much what we already knew: Star Wars, Maleficent, some new original shows, a decent helping of both more NatGeo and Disney Channel content added to the library, etc.

Here's a poster for you to look at:

The UK is also getting some stuff in May. Besides the usual originals, they're also getting:

-The Rise of Skywalker on May 4, along with season 1 of Star Wars Resistance and Lego Star Wars All Stars
-Lost Treasures of the Maya (season 1)
-Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
-Bizaardvark
-SparkShorts Loop and Out
-Marvel Rising: Battle of the Bands, Operation Shuri, and Playing With Fire
-Marvels Future Avengers (Season 2)
-Night at the Museum
-Zenimation

Plus more. Check the whole list here:

What the heck is Zenimation? No clue, but apparently it's something new from Disney. Could be yet another new original. Could also be a misprint that wasn't supposed to be on this list.

Australia/New Zealand are also getting some unique releases:
-101 Dalmatian Street
-season 2 of Star Wars Resistance to go along with Rise of Skywalker on the 4th
-Time Scanners season 1
-Maleficent Mistress of Evil
-TOTS season 1

Plus a bunch of the common releases that both the US and UK are getting, of both originals and older Disney material. Whole list:

Anyone having trouble signing on? We got the service but for some reason it won't load on my Amazon Firestick.

Jason

One thing I have run into that's kind of annoying, is that it doesn't save my login stuff on the website, so I every time I get on I have to sign on again. I watch everything on my TV/PS4, so it's not that much of a problem, just a bit annoying when I want to look for stuff while I'm on my computer.
