News The Disney+ (The New Streaming Service) Thread

The Muppets Take Manhattan and Muppets from Space are apparently both owned by Sony, not Disney. Copyrights for music and film clips seem to be holding back The Muppet Show and Muppet Babies. No idea what's holding back Dinosaurs, which was released on Hulu in 2017, but isn't there now.
Oh, I didn't think about the music for The Muppet Show, and the clips for Muppet Babies.
I didn't realize those two movies were owned by Sony, I had assumed everything Muppet related was with Disney at this point.
Are the music rights different for DVD and streaming? The first 3 seasons of The Muppet Show have all been released on DVD, and before those were released there were a whole bunch of Best of... DVDs with episodes from throughout the whole series.

I think they're different for each type of release. Every time it changes formats, the rights have to be negotiated.

Today most rights are negotiated "future proof" with clauses for any "future" media. But back before the turn of the millennium no-one dreamed there would be a market for TV beyond over-the-air/cable broadcasts.

Oh yes, for example the opening credits theme songs for House and Charmed exist as broadcast on the DVDs, but had to be replaced for streaming.

I did not know that, I watched them when they originally aired, but I haven't seen them on streaming.

Super surprising news this morning:

This was originally scheduled to hit movie theaters in October of 2021. Next year!! They're bringing it forward by more than 15 months. And they're bringing it straight to D+.

The movie was filmed way back in 2016 (with all of the original cast onstage, like Lin Manuel Miranda, etc), so it's been done for a long time. Apparently Disney outbid other studios for the completed film, and wound up paying $75M for it. Why you'd do that and then turn around and skip the theaters and go straight to D+ is a bit of a mystery to me. While it's still possible that there could still be a theatrical release in October 2021, it seems unlikely that it would make anywhere near the money it would've if it wasn't already widely available on D+.

Also: looks like this will be available on every version of D+. This is not a US exclusive, it's going everywhere.

Well, maybe something good will happen on my Birthday. I've never seen Hamilton so I might watch this, considering I might not be able to do anything else.

I'm really excited about this, I've listened to a good chunk of the soundtrack, but I wasn't sure if I was ever going to actually get to see it.

So glad they moved up the premiere date and put it on D+. I became obsessed with the soundtrack after the Tony show in 2016 and I’ve seen the bootleg on YouTube, which also had the original cast, but this is going to be special.

Per Lin Manuel, it’s going to include close ups and stuff you couldn’t see in the live show. Still nothing like live theater, but this will do until theaters reopen. Can’t wait for this.

Good news. I read the original Percy Jackson books years ago and they're surprisingly good. Plus I'm a sucker for Greek mythology. I also think this will work far better as a TV show than as a film series.

And if this does well, Riordan has a whole interconnected universe just waiting to be adapted. He's also done a sequel series that's based on the Roman version of Greek gods, a trilogy concurrent to Percy Jackson that's about Egyptian mythology, and his current series is based on Norse mythology.

New doggie series started. New big budget movie added. More Mandalorian behind the scenes.

Lots of Disney+ news this week:

-Hamilton coming in July
-new Percy Jackson series being developed
-new series announced: 6-episode "Into The Unknown: Making Frozen 2", with all six episodes scheduled to drop on June 26
-that Taylor Swift concert next week is going to be "limited time only", presumably the same for those Disney Family Singalong specials
-Disney+ has purchased a music-centered teen drama true-life movie called Clouds to air this fall

meanwhile, some alternate Disney+ universes have accidentally been created:

I believe the same as the US, they got Maleficent Two too

I wish they would add the Star Wars: Droids and Ewoks series to Disney+. I've been curious about them for a long time, but I've ever seen is the first one or two episodes of Droids.

I watched 'Avengers:United They Stand' which is on the disney plus.
Knew very little about this show, only that it was part of the same continuity as the 90s spiderman and x-men cartoon. Pretty rubbish unfortunately.

United They Stand almost always ranks towards the very bottom of people's rankings of Marvel animated shows. Pretty much the exact opposite of Earth's Mightiest Heroes or Wolverine and the X-Men, which usually rank right towards the top.

The Silver Surfer show form the 90's is pretty cool if you haven't watched that one yet.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard a good thing about United They Stand.
What about the Iron Man and Incredible Hulk series from that era? I've never really heard much about them.
