You know more about Star Trek than anybody in your household, and probably than in your dormitory floor. And in that situation, you can get away with that sort of smug bullshit. But around here... you're the intern trying to lecture the chief surgeons, without ever having held a scalpel yourself... and it shows.
You sound like an egomaniac.
Um... you need to work on reading comprehension. If I'd said that I, personally, am the ONLY PERSON HERE who knows this stuff... that might be "egomaniacal." So, is that what you think I said there? You might wanna read again. Your reading comprehension seems a bit off.
This ENTIRE SITE is just FILLED with people who know this stuff. And know it better than you, our would-be-lecturer, do.
That's not all that big of a deal... except that you had the audacity to start LECTURING PEOPLE on this stuff, as though you'd made some form of amazing new discovery. Hell, next thing we know, you'll be at a geologist's convention announcing in that same would-be-lecturer tone that you've discovered that ... gasp... the earth is ROUND!
WTF it is just a TV show. That kind of attitude is what's wrong with fans like you.
Thanks for telling me what's "wrong with me." No, really... I appreciate it.
I'm not responding to the rest because you're not worth it. Instead of "tearing anyone a new asshole," you show yourself to be a jerk.
Actually, you aren't responding because you're not up to it. I find that sort of response is common from people who can't address specifics. You don't like what's said, so you throw a few personal attacks and then take your ball and go home. Carefully tapdancing around addressing any of the actual points of conversation, you instead call me a poopie-head and run away. Whatever...
I like the old 1701. It is one of my favorite ships. But I'm not going to denigrate other's art because it doesn't fit in with some hypothetical bullshit.
Uh... whose art did I denigrate? Okay, I stated pretty strongly that I HATE the Voyager design. Unless you're the guy who created it, this is hardly PERSONAL, is it?
I didn't denigrate your "art." I challenged your misstatements. If you'd simply said "this is what I want to see" that would be one thing. But you tried to make it seem as though you were speaking from a position of AUTHORITY, by virtue of being an engineering student. Being a student does NOT make you an authority, however... it's just the first step on the path to EVENTUALLY becoming one, and not necessarily on every possible topic.
I've become an authority on several topics, and it's those which I tend to act as an authority on. Engineering, and particularly aircraft and spacecraft structures, is an area where I AM an authority (albeit not "THE authority"...there are people who know a lot more about this stuff than I do, and a few of them, also, post on this BBS, just so you know!)
You posted a strongly stated position, claiming that your status as an engineering student made it unquestionable. That is NOT a wise position to stake out, boys and girls. If you're going to make that sort of statement, you NEED to be prepared to defend your position. If you're too sensitive and delicate to take criticism, maybe you should avoid making comments that are likely to DRAW it.
Politicians, for instance, should expect that every comment that they ever make will be needled over ad-nauseum. If they can't take it... they should find another line of work. PUBLIC STATEMENTS (and this is a public forum, after all) are entirely subject to discussion, debate, and being CHALLENGED.
Your argument was weak. It's up to you, now, to come back with a stronger, rethought argument, addressing the points which were raised... or to accept that you're not able to handle criticism and should avoid doing things that might bring it about!
That's really YOUR call. But you really need to learn this lesson now, before you end up out in the real world, in your first engineering job, and try pulling the same sort of stunt in a situation where it will MATTER. Challenging the VP of Engineering on why he's wrong and you're right about a point is something you need to be VERY careful about if you decide to do it. Claiming to speak as an "authority," God forbid LECTURING to him... how well ya think that'll turn out for ya?
