The death of Admiral Forrest in "The Forge"

Delta Vega

Commodore
Commodore
All seemed a bit sudden, a bit out of the blue
I liked this character, he was a straight down the middle guy, who backed Archer to the hilt through many a crisis
A father figure almost, then kaboom. . . . . .no Forrest
Those unscrupulous Vulcans being "difficult" again in this episode, a common theme in Enterprise
Whats your thoughts on his untimely demise ?

I liked the character of Admiral Forrest. I thought Vaughn Armstrong did a good job bringing to life a character who is fair, competent, and loyal. He would go to bat for anyone under his command. His death in The Forge was indicative of the kind of man Forrest was as he saved Soval's life in the face of imminent death. Soval still expressed concerns about humans and their impetuous push into the stars, but Forrest's death perhaps served to dissuade Soval and other Vulcans about their misconceptions about humans. Not that Forrest was a martyr or anything but if there was a good representative for humanity to reach out a hand of friendship to the Vucans, Forrest would have been a good choice.

I think its a bit unfair to brand him as "bland"
He`s an Admiral, he can hardly be one of the boys, skulling beers in the Officers Mess
I thought Vaughn Armstrong played him well, measured and underplayed

Forrest was a man of honor and integrity...in BOTH universes.

Notice how his MU counterpart died in much the same manner as the prime version did: sacrificing himself to save others. You don't see a lot of that in the MU, do ya? :techman:

I read that the actor wasn't that crazy about the character either. He thought he'd played better characters and that's certainly true.

I think it is not decisive the meaning of creators or actress, audience has this privilege to decide about performance. I am not talking about only Vaughn Armstrong or Star Trek.
As this year we were at the Con in our ENT uniforms, we met with Mr. Armstrong. He greet us with shinny eyes and said "Hey, you have great uniforms, you are my people" We went to Con, while we wanted to experience our "Galaxy Quest" moment. At this special moment, we realized that it can be also very pleasant. :adore:

I think, if Mr. Vaughn did not like Admiral Forest, he could ignore us, easily.

Forrest really didn't do much besides provide exposition, and whatever character moment he'd have was very minimal. That's not a slight against the character, that was just how he functioned.

Anyone who thinks Forrest is bland, obviously hasn't seen "First Flight" (specifically, the bit where he lays the smackdown on Archer and AG Robinson) OR "In A Mirror, Darkly".

That said, I admit my opinion is biased, simply because Vaughn Armstrong is my favorite actor of all time*, but I hope he didn't dislike playing Forrest. If he preferred some of the other Trek roles he's played, well, that's one thing. He is a professional, after all - he takes the roles he's given, and he can be trusted to give the best performance he can, even in roles which might not be his favorite. He can't be expected to like all his Trek roles equally - it's only natural that he might pick a favorite. And if that favorite isn't Forrest, well, that's not his fault, is it?

Indeed, in the link that @Terok Nor provided, he did say this: "I didn’t go in every day but every role was a good one." That is definitely a good sign. :techman:

*also because Forrest reminded me a lot of my own father. That's why it was so hard for me to see Forrest die - in EITHER universe. It was almost like...well, you know. :sigh:

And I know I've said this a few dozen times, but I really hope Vaughn turns up on Discovery in some form. I don't care who he plays. He's had such an important and extensive contribution to Trek over the years, it's unthinkable that DSC wouldn't seek him out at some point.

edit: I'm getting verklempt...talk amongst yourselves... :wah:

What an utterly cool experience you had!

Indeed!

We have already booked the Vaughn Armstrong Photo Session before we leave for Con. We thought, we should not miss the opportunity to meet with a legend, but sometimes life has better plans.

sekundant, I have modified one of your attempts into a clickable link to your picture. (Nice!)

Apparently the problem is with the way Google Drive shares pictures. The link you used here doesn't go straight to your picture, but to a link to the picture. That's why the image won't show up.

Thank you very very much HopefulRomantic, nice to have a caring moderator :luvlove:

It is off topic, but is there some suggested and actual photo publisher service for Trek BBS?

I live to serve.

Any image-hosting site that offers direct links to images (not like Google Drive) should work just fine here.

I used Photobucket back in the day, then they lost their minds and went premium, took my pictures hostage, and I stopped posting pics. I see they have recovered their sanity and my pictures are still there, but ewww, that watermark is new and quite ugly.

(keeping this post on topic)

There's also Imgur, ImageShack, Dropbox, Flickr, TinyPic, lots of others. Check a few out and see which one works best for you.

ETA: Hmm, I don't see the ugly watermark on my tablet. Maybe there's hope for P'bucket after all.

.

I used Photobucket back in the day but I also stopped when they went premium. Kind of pissed me off. I didn't know they stopped that practice. Maybe my old photos are still there. I started calling them Pissbucket.
