Don't get me wrong, I cried each time I saw that and it was a lot of times as that is my favourite Star Trek movie ever.

Watched part of Skyfall last night and was thinking about what shit that movie would have been if the writers had been more traditionally respectful of "canon." Instead, continuity was treated as a fun element to play with for the entertainment of the long-time fans but not allowed to interfere with the storytelling...and it turned out great.

“George Kirk Died” is a simplification of “George Kirk rammed the Kelvin into the Narada, disabling it and saving 800 lives at the cost of his own and his ship.” By contrast it’s disproportionate to take a hidden reference to family and celebrate a Star Trek event on a private person’s birthday, without even knowing what they would’ve thought of that idea. JJ honoring him is one thing, but strangers on the internet? I hope it’s clearer why I’m suggesting more subtlety in choosing an appropriate date.
January 4. Birthdate of Kelvin Kirk, essentially the Kelvin universe and the day the USS Kelvin mattered in the vast and infinite scheme of things.
05/14, because I'm not going to buy that KT stardates are counting the days after the decimal until we hear one that's three digits (or includes the appropriate level of zero-padding). Maybe it's petty, but I can't get past the fact that 2258.04 meaning January 4, 2258 makes no sense. January 15th (4% of the way through the year), that'd be workable. I'll even take February 9 (the 40th day of the year, assuming they dropped the trailing zero, because that's how decimals work). But January 4? Doesn't fit.
As I just posted in the other thread, CBS officially recognizes January 17 as Enterprise Day (date rendered 17/01) which was indeed the whole reason Disco's second season premiered that day. So if Official Enterprise Day can be 17/01, then Fan Kelvin Day can be 05/14.
But even there you can see how 17/01 feels like a superficial marketing device of the day, not something with decades of history behind it, though at least that one doesn’t come with this side effect of hijacking a family member’s concealed birthday.
