The Dark Knight = OVERRATED

So I have seen this film and the film is good but not great but I am personally aghast and surprised by how much praise and worship this film got. the film was deemed so good and so great that I gave it a chance and I saw it and wasn't blown away. in fact I am confused by all the ..oh my gosh the film is so fantasic:rolleyes: like most people were saying..really?

I dont get what makes the film great besides all the ledger thing and even he was overhyped as the joker because he died. (RIP)

I also wondered what the outcome would have been if Heath Ledger had not died. I doubt this film will be so talked about or so excessively praised.:rolleyes:Its like people forgot batman was in the film. great films are not because of one character , a great film is because of an ensemble cast not one character carrying the film.

I hope I don't get that much hate here but I am sorry the dark knight is just overrated, I think people gush about the film because it is the cool and hip thing to do and it atomically means you are in the cool guys club, its sad because I felt batman begins was better. I know in the comic world it has become BLASPHEMY:rolleyes: to say another superhero film is better than the dark knight :rolleyes:when in reality many superhero films are much better including batman begins.

this film also has one of the worst portrayal of a leading heroine and a one dimensional villain who was just too perfect that he came of as a mary sue character.

Give me Tim Burton's Batman any day . Burton did batman so much better unlike Nolan whose directing is so one dimensional and bland that it makes my head hurt.

So I'm only saying I like the film so I can be in the cool guy club? Then where the fuck is my cool guy badge, and why am I not getting the cool guy newsletter?

Yes, because starting a needlessly ranty thread calling something popular "overrated" and condescendingly looking down on those who enjoy it is not a hip or common thing to do on the internet. Way to think different, rebel.

I liked Batman Begins over TDK. Something felt off about TDK. The tragedy of Heath Ledger has something to do with it for me.

ETA: Not overrated though.

I feel you tay. batman begins was better and it felt like a more organic film. with the dark knight it was more about heath ledger's joker than the film. once you remove the joker form the film it becomes forgettable at least in my personal opinion.

good film but great film. not a chance to me.

I don't think that Begins is a better film than The Dark Knight, but it's definitely a tighter and more watchable film.

What I do appreciate about The Dark Knight is how it (and its sequel even moreso) shows that Bruce Wayne's macho power fantasy -- Batman -- makes things worse, not better.

It's a great trilogy. Every movie has its good parts and so so parts, but overall are quite enjoyable.

Agree with the o/p about TDK. The best and pretty much only reason to see the mvie was Ledger's perfoirmance. And I truly believe that the movie's incredible box office owes mostly to Ledger's unfortunate passing.

I thought BB was drek, a serious snoozefest. Frankly I'm glad that Nolan has moved on from the series though I know that his style will continue to permeate all DC superhero movies. Thank TDK because it made all that money.

If I've said it once, I've said it a billion times: "overrated" and "underrated" are entirely subjective terms and thus utterly irrelevant to a discussion on quality.

Are you in high school? No one gives a fuck about any "cool guys club". Get over yourself.

And this is coming from someone who agrees with your thread title.

Ledger was fine, but it was the Gary Oldman middle scenes which I particularly appreciated. I saw TDK twice in order to see the second time with my best friend, who's 20 times the Batman fan I am. He was absolutely convinced Gordon was actually dead. So was I, the first time. So it's fun to wait for friends's reactions to key scenes.
I think this film (my favorite of 2008) was a major inspiration for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (my favorite of 2013).

well it didn't turn out all that good for trek into darkness but I feel you on Gordon. I feel Gordon was the most layered of all the characters is too bad everyone was just worshiping the joker like a sungod:rolleyes: to take not on Gordon who was the most 3 dimensional character of the film in comparison to the joker who was a one dimensional character.

I tend to agree as well, I preferred Batman Begins.

But back to the OP's point. Expectations play a key role in how we percieve something. You went into waching the film with high expectations, when people have high expectations they are more likely to be dissapointed. The reverse can be true as well if you go into something hearing how awful it is you might be plesantly surprised.

I love The Dark Knight, even more than Batman Begins. I really don't see the focus on the characters as a negative, especially the Joker.

Loving the movie hasn't gotten me any friends or attention, so liking it to be "cool" wouldn't do me much good.

The opposite could be true, also. Granted I was 10 at the time, but I had high expectations for Star Trek V, and I loved it. I've also watched movies knowing I was going to dislike them (each time because I was going with someone who wanted to see it), and came out agreeing with my initial assessment. More recently, I went into Guardians of the Galaxy with very high expectations and was blown away as it met or exceeded my expectations.

I think it's a film whose reputation precedes it and colours the first viewing. A rewatch might improve it greatly once the palate has been cleansed. In that sense, it probably has somethin in common with The Godfather.

Also, it had a scintillating viral marketing campaign, so much so that the news of Ledger's death felt kind of like a surreal next step.
