Doing it i over, I would make Defiant’s crew a new generation of MACO’s. It makes sense as Defiant is the Federation’s first purpose-built warship. Why not bring back the old Starfleet marines as well?
Then, I would make the Defiant the second Edison Class escort cruiser to tie things up nicely.

I just watched The Search, and it's pretty obvious that the Defiant was supposed to be really small - which goes back to the earlier plans for a "beefier runabout".

Good call. Reached The Search last week in my DS9 rewatch, and I hadn’t noticed before then how parts of the script feels like it wasn’t rewritten for the eventual Defiant being a fully-fledged (if small) starship rather than a Runabout Plus.

Bones never took a station on the bridge and never fired a ship's weapon. Fist fights? Yeah. Hand phasers on stun? Yeah. Defended himself on planet Rome? Yeah. I think the most violent thing he ever did was fry the Mugatu.

Agreed. But the doctor being on the bridge all the time went back to McCoy. Bickering with Spock was clearly his station

One of the things I liked about ENT was that Phlox stuck to being the ship's medical/life sciences expert and stayed in 'his own lane' (apart from one or two episodes) as should be the case in the RW.
