The Completely Shallow Holiday Materialism Thread.

Re: What do you want for Christmas?

I want to see the happy faces of my loved ones when they open my hopefully well-chosen presents.

After going to a friend's party this weekend, I want a huge set of battery operated candles, so I can make a holiday display like hers without burning my house down!

Yes, I'm quoting myself here...but I just got a package--- three color-changing, battery operated candles with a remote!! YES!!

*happy dance*

Replying to myself, I know....BUT, I just got ANOTHER package from my pal in Pennsylvania. She sent me two strings of Tardis lights, two Tardis beachtowels, and a Tardis silicone mold (man, I wish I had some Jello in the house)! Holy Doctor Who Mother-lode! I'm going to need to get another tree next year, so I can put the Doctor Who lights on it!

I just have to say this: I can't stand cheapskates.

I'm not taking about the coworker who gives me a cheap box of chocolates although I'm diabetic. I'm referring to the person I typically exchange presents with who didn't give me shit this year. Yeah, that's right. I'm a shallow, materialistic jerk, and this is the thread for me. ;) But seriously, that's not what the holidays should be about. I'm so ashamed of myself for having high expectations.

^Well, it IS kinda crappy that the person didn't give you ANYTHING--I mean, not even a card? That's pretty low. A sincere card from someone makes me more happy than a crappy present from someone who doesn't give a damn. For example:

My in-laws frequently give me pierced earrings and I don't have pierced ears--even though I've told them repeatedly I don't wear earrings of any kind. One year, they even left the .99 cent price tag on them. Then, there's the year my mother-in-law picked up a piece of torn wrapping paper, wrote "IOU one present" on it and handed it to me--after we sat and watched everyone else open up the presents she gave them. Aaah, feel the love!

Nope, not even a candy wrap. That's why I stopped gifting many of my colleagues years ago. I couldn't help but feel shafted. I know it's shallow and petty, but if I put a lot of effort getting a gift for someone, I at least expect a thank-you. There was one lady whom I gifted one year, and she told me she didn't have money and her hubby got laid off. Fine, I wasn't expecting to be reciprocated. Then she went on to post on Facebook that she was spending a week in Las Vegas to celebrate New Year's.

Unfriend! Block!

Yikes!

I got hot chocolate and chocolate from someone who knew I am allergic to dairy last year. Although, the mug was pretty. And it was a re-gifted gift.

So many nice things!

* A friend got me a Lumia 520 with Windows 8.1 (and Cortana!). I have never had a phone that fancy before!
* My mom and dad got me a Kindle Fire HD
* My brother and his wife got me a really great shirt that says "Home is where the Wi-Fi automatically connects."

I also got an Old Spice gift set (I love Old Spice), and a precision screwdriver kit with 44 different bits! I know why I got that one. The other day my dad asked if I could fix his glasses for him, and it took me half an hour to find a decent bit in my tool kit. So I figure he saw how pathetic my kit was (I've had it since 1998, when I first started my computer business), and decided it was time I got an upgrade. :D

This is probably the nicest (in terms of gifts received) Christmas I've had in many years.

Here's a picture from last night:

I've become rather fond of Canada here lately (Toronto is one of my favorite cities I've ever visited) so my dad got me a little gold coin with the maple leaf on one side and Queen Elizabeth on the other.

That's awesome! I love coins from other countries, though I wouldn't call myself a numismatic. Also, I'm typing this from my Kindle Fire HD 6. It's smooth and fast, like me! :D

I received 4 figurines (2 giraffes, a black cat and a rocking horse), a box of chocolates and $130 worth of donations to ShelterBox.

Here are the giraffes

I got a Haunted History DVD set, season one of Sherlock on Blu-Ray (which provides incentive for me to buy a Blu-Ray player), a Kermit the Frog Chia Pet (:rommie:), and an amazing set of international teas that I may just use for aromatherapy rather than beverages.

Those are fantastic. My Sister got an abstract metal giraffe figurine. She loves giraffes.

Well, now that I've finished up my X-Mas money, here's the final tally (all ordered from Amazon):

Doctor Who: The Trial of a Timelord DVD set
Doctor Who: The Web of Fear DVD
Marvel's The Avengers DVD (I've seen it several times and love it, but never bought it)
The Dresden Files Season 1 DVD
DBZ Budakai HD Collection (PS3)
Essential Uncanny X-Men Volume 5

Plus a few things I got without ordering (mostly clothes).

Got some really nice things from my family: a new, blue phone case, a Walking Dead BANG! card game, a turquoise suitcase, some Wusthoff knives, some new cat toys for Junior, and Mark Twain's Autobiography. A friend gave me a leaf broach, and another friend gave a dvd of the TV show "Case Histories."
