The College Football Thread

Would it make me cynical if I said I'm not at all surprised that they cleared Newton? Cam Newton in contention for the Heisman adds up to more hype and bigger ratings for the award show, after all.

Unless this turns into a Reggie Bush situation a few years from now, that is.

I'm not particularly surprised that he was cleared, and that's not from any detailed knowledge of the case. But consider USC's argument that they didn't know about the Reggie Bush benefits. The NCAA didn't buy that and said that they should have known - and gave them fairly severe sanctions. Imagine the penalty that Auburn would have received if Newton was guilty of rules violations. Auburn definitely knew about the possibility, as it was all over the media, and still chose to play him. If he turned out to be ineligible, I can only imagine the almighty smackdown the NCAA would issue (perhaps comparable to the SMU "death penalty"). So Auburn must have been basically 100% certain that Newton was eligible.

Thank you for the condolences, Kestrel. I'm still licking my wounds. :(

Cam Newton is only declared eligible for the time being. Sanctions could still come down later on Auburn. Cam hasn't been completely cleared. The FBI is still investigating money changing hands illegally. Auburn could still get nailed in the future.

True, but the way the statement was released by the NCAA follows earlier patterns where exoneration was followed by closure of the case.

Of course Cam Newton is cleared. The NCAA needs Auburn in the national championship game, not TCU.

That's how you get the convenient excuse that the father is guilty, the son didn't know about, so therefore no rules were broken.

Boise St would have been a more attractive team than TCU, imho. At least, the buzz seemed that way, right up until Nevada had other ideas.

I'm surprised that during Notre Dame's bowless seasons that NBC didn't create the NBC Notre Dame National Championship Bowl... where they would pit Notre Dame against some Division II school for the right to be crowned NBC Notre Dame National Champion.

Beebe's a tool. However, that being said--you never know about some crazy nutter fans. I suspect Beebe will escape unscathed from the Nebraska menace.

Yeah. At least my Vols were expected to have shit for a season, and it still hurt losing to the Tide like we did; having hopes and dreams dashed sucks.

I'm still rooting for the Beavers and Gamecocks this weekend.

There's a Notre Dame High in Chattanooga. That would be an even match up.

An Oregon/TCU national championship would suddenly have all those BCS $$$$$$ liars who "care too about the education of the student-athlete to have a playoff format" (even though all the other collegiate football divisions have playoffs and in other sports players are sometimes on the road for an entire month during the playoffs) singing another tune.

Looks like TCU won't be headed to the Big East after all. They just accepted a more lucrative offer to join the NFC West.

I am probably the only one from here who watched this game last night, but WOW what a win for my alma mater - Miami U over the N. Illinois Huskies 26-21!

Going in I thought that the Redsk... errr, Red-Hawks had little to no chance, especially with their starting QB out due to injuries. But a solid, sound defense and mistake-free ball will always give an underdog a chance! What a turnaround from last year's 1-11 season.

Congrats to the Redhawks! I went to grad school further up US27 so every time I headed south I would drive through Oxford - beautiful campus.
