The College Football Thread

That must be why the NCAA never nails them for all the shit they pull. ;)

Why would the NCAA want to nail USC? It's like when one of their prized teams commits several violations and the punishment is to put an asterisk in their record book. But a nobody school commits the same violations and they're given the death penalty.

I'm still waiting for that fall out from the whole Reggie Bush situation, which indeed was in violation of NCAA rules.

Spoken like a bitter Cal fan....

I don't know exactly what to make of the Bush thing, but I can say this: it made no difference at all to what happened on the field. That's a fact.

You're right, it didn't, but breaking the rules is still breaking the rules.

Do I even need to say how Colorado State did today? Slaughtered like lambs by Texas Christian. My Cam the Ram doll is going to hang himself. :(

They ought to put Cam in the game. He certainly couldn't tackle any worse than the defense does. Wow.

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 17th, 2009

2 – Florida (6-0)
3 – Cincinnati (6-0)
4 – Texas (6-0)
5 – Iowa (7-0)
6 – Miami, Florida (5-1)
7 – Boise State (6-0)
8 – Oregon (5-1)
9 – Georgia Tech (6-1)
10 – Southern California (5-1)
11 – Texas Christian (6-0)
12 – Louisiana State (5-1)
13 – Houston (5-1)
14 – Oklahoma State (5-1)
15 – Pittsburgh (6-1)
16 – Virginia Tech (5-2)
17 – Brigham Young (6-1)
18 – South Florida (5-1)
19 – Utah (5-1)
20 – West Virginia (5-1)
21 – South Carolina (5-2)
22 – Texas Tech (5-2)
23 – Penn State (6-1)
24 – Michigan (5-2)
25 – Central Michigan (6-1)

Rutgers Watch: The Knights played decently opportunistic football, but fell at home to the Pitt Panthers 24-17. This drops them to 4-2 overall, but 0-2 and essentially eliminated from Big East title contention. Clearly there's hope for the future, especially if someone on the offensive staff acquires playcalling ability, but ... for now, RU is by no means a Top Twenty-Five team.

I'm not a bitter Cal fan and I'm waiting for that. Every other school in the NCAA is waiting for that. SC flouted the rules with that kid and never suffered a damn thing. It's galling what they've gotten away with. Sooner or later, if the NCAA ever wants to get taken seriously, they need to come down hard on SC.

Actually the death penalty was only given once in college football history, and it wasn't to a "nobody" school (at least at the time). SMU had their 1986-87 football seasons canceled as the result of numerous rule violations. The Mustangs, who had been a fairly big-time program before the sanction, have yet to see their football program recover. It is unlikely we will see such a drastic penalty ever enacted again as it proved to have negative reprecussions not just for the SMU program, but for the Southwestern Conference as a whole.

If it's all found to be true, then yes USC should be sanctioned. I have no problem with that, and I won't make any excuses for that.

The sad part of course is that if these allegations are true, Reggie Bush walks away untouched while people who weren't even on the team at the time of the violation(s) pay the price.

You're right. Reggie's got his contract and money, it won't matter to him.

What gets me is when a coach leaves a school ahead of NCAA sanctions, his former school pays the price and he's just got a new job with no repercussions.

In other news, a UConn cornerback was stabbed to death at a party following their victory over Louisville

Well, I'm ashamed to say it, as an Auburn fan--but I think after yesterday's miserable showing against Kentucky, we've crashed and burned for the season. LSU's next on the schedule, and I don't think there's any way we can hold up against that.

Better luck next year, guys.

Well, Bucky had a good first half, and then just barfed the second half. Could the Iowa Hawkeyes be in contention for the BCS Championship? That would certainly be like swallowing a buckeye for the Buckeyes.

Nahhh.... Iowa stands no chance for the championship game, because too many teams above them would have to lose twice: Bama, Florida, Texas, and possibly Va Tech. The Hawkeyes are definitely in the running for the Rose Bowl birth and will probably go if they win in Columbus.

They have to show some evidence that USC had some knowledge of it, and so far I don't think there is any such evidence. NCAA used to come hard on schools in these "agent" cases, which doesn't make sense since the agents aren't trying to help the schools, in fact they are working against them. But in recent times NCAA has been more reasonable. Michigan didn't receive any penalties in the Woodson case because NCAA said they had no knowledge. But then again NCAA is always unpredictable, so anything could happen.

They sure are taking their sweet time about it. You'd think if they had something solid on USC they would have come out with it by now.

Bloody hell. Huskers went totally down the crapper against Texas Tech. Our offense sucks, it has absolutely no identity. :(

I'd settle for roses; however Iowa would most likely choke come game day. :(

If the Hawks get to the end of the season undefeated, and the only teams ahead of them in the BCS have one loss, then it's an awful damn sad commentary on the lack of respect for the Big1T1en.
