The cast mostly had strange names.......

They are unique indeed. :D

But I still can get over the fact that Sisko is a Finnish word and means sister. Tee hee. "She's my sister" = "Hän on minun sisko."

Didn't know that one. Now it's going to stick in my head when I watch the show.

What if I hear Sisko talking and imagine a very tiny, girlish voice dubbing him instead? :D

J.

LOL! Luckily we don't dub TV shows in this country. Unless they are for small kiddies. :)

Oh, it won't be audible, just in my own fevered imagination. ;)

*LOL* Have fun. There's a nice contrast between Sisko's physical appearance and tiny little girlish voice.

I always found "Gates" to be a strange name. I wonder how many of these names are just stage names versus real names?
“Gates” is actually a middle name. Cheryl Gates McFadden. Mother’s maiden name or something like that, I imagine. She worked on TV and movies as a choreographer under the name Cheryl McFadden. For some reason when she started acting she wanted to use a different name as an actress than as a choreographer, so she decided to use “Gates McFadden” as an actress and “Cheryl McFadden” as a choreographer.

Anyone else thought that the cast of DS9 had some really strange names? Strange names in BOLD.

I have never seen anyone have the same first names as the following.

AVERY Brooks
COLM Meany
ARMIN Shimerman
CIRROC Lofton
ARON (not Aaron) Eisenberg
SALOME Jens
ROSALIND Chao

Unique last names:

Rene Auberjonois (How does one pronounce "Auberjonois"? I would pronounce it Ah-ber-jon-wa. His name isn't that strange really, it's French.)
The French pronounciation would be O-ber-zhon-wa. The only question is whether Rene pronounces is the French way, or an Anglicized way.

Max Grodenchik

Marc Alaimo (Again, how does one pronounce Alaimo? Alamo, like the place in Texas?
Doesn't seem to be that unusual in Italy: http://www.facebook.com/s.php?q=alaimo&init=quick

Non-English surnames = strange surnames? :shifty:

Yeah its pronounced that way... he's actually from my mom's alma mater of Marquette University here in Milwaukee, WI.

Kinda weird to think that we got both the original Captain Pike and Gul Dukat from Milwaukee...

"Major Kira... please... let me take a sip of water... from the bubbler and then I'll come by you, y'know?"

(Try and catch the three Milwaukeeisms in that sentence)

Anyone else thought that the cast of DS9 had some really strange names?...
I am not making fun of these fine actors, I just find some of their names to be strange.

They are, admittedly, uncommon in late 20th / early 21st century U.S.A. But, if that makes them "really strange," you have a very narrow world view.

Unfortunately you have a lot of company. There was a long history of U.S. customs officials anglicizing the surnames of immigrants, officials imposing "anglo" names on American Indians, Hollywood insisting on English-sounding names, and so on.

Thank goodness we're moving away from that insistence on uniformity.
