The cast mostly had strange names.......

Mr. Scott

Commander
Anyone else thought that the cast of DS9 had some really strange names? Strange names in BOLD.

I have never seen anyone have the same first names as the following.

AVERY Brooks
COLM Meany
ARMIN Shimerman
CIRROC Lofton
ARON (not Aaron) Eisenberg
SALOME Jens
ROSALIND Chao

Unique last names:

Rene Auberjonois (How does one pronounce "Auberjonois"? I would pronounce it Ah-ber-jon-wa. His name isn't that strange really, it's French.)

Max Grodenchik

Marc Alaimo (Again, how does one pronounce Alaimo? Alamo, like the place in Texas?

And of course, our grand prize winner.................

NANA VISITOR

I am not making fun of these fine actors, I just find some of their names to be strange.

Nah, Colm is a fairly common name in Ireland. I know quite a few people with that name.

I never thought anything of it. Like Joe pointed out, Earth is a big place. Lots of different names.

You've got to be kidding. :wtf: It's not a popular name these days, but it used to be very common. Take her, for example.

Avery's not terribly common as a given name, but there are a few.

^^^^
Indeed, not to mention the heroine of Shakespeare's As You Like It.

As for the rest... well, I'd argue most probably just weren't that common. I'm sure you could find some Averys, Armins, and Colms if you tried hard enough, although I'll admit I've never met any. A number of them are probably, as has been stated, more common in places outside of North America.

As for last names, well, I've encountered people with all sorts of interesting and unique-sounding surnames. Is there no diversity where you live?

Armin is actually a pretty common name in central/eastern Europe. I haven't heard it much over here, apart from "Armin Tamzarian".

Am I the only one to find it ironic the OP didn't list Siddig El Fadil?

Not that I have anything against his name- in fact I was a bit disappointed when he switched to Alexander.

Deforest/Nichelle/Shatner/Nimoy/Takei/Koenig/Doohan...
William/Leonard/George/Walter/James is about as vanilla as it gets.

So is Patrick/Jonathan/Denise/Michael/Gates*/Marina/Brent/Wil.

(* Gates is actually McFadden’s middle name; her first name is Cheryl, which is even more commonplace.)

The trend with DS9 is definitely unusual.

I always found "Gates" to be a strange name. I wonder how many of these names are just stage names versus real names?

Quite a few. Patrick Stewart's real name is actually Alfred Slingsby. (Patrick is his middle name, and Stewart his mother's maiden name)

Oh I think that's pretty cool actually. I don't really see the point of stage names though, beyond just having something that sounds "cool".

Because agents and casting directors believe that people have a bad habit of not quickly accepting someone who has an unusual name, a difficult to pronounce name, or an "ethnic" name. Unfortunately, sometimes they're right.

Other times, their name is already taken by another SAG member, they feel their name isn't catchy enough, or it's done on an eccentric whim.

yes, especially considering his full name is Siddig El Tahir El Fadil El Siddig Abderahman Mohammed Ahmed Abdel Karim El Mahdi according to the memory alpha wiki. now THAT'S a name.
