The Bridge

Was the bridge ever int he dome part? I thought the dome sat on top of the bridge like a sensor pod or something. Not sure I'm buying the window bit because it wouldn't seem easy to change view angles (aft view).

Well, it was a window, but it's one of those windows with the overlay technology (we have that now!), where you can be staring out the window one moment, flip a switch and you're talking to someone a thousand miles away. It's more than just a window, though.

Yeah, they make cars with the speedometer on the glass of the windshield. Playing video on it at some point in several centuries isn't impossible.

There's a company that has made a polymer that is a few mm thick, yet can display true color video. It's fascinating.

Actually, the technology already has that capability. I've seen some tech shows on History Channel and the Science Channel that featured technology that displayed interactive information on panes of glass, mirrors, etc. that included video. I'm sure if you search the interwebs, you can find a video. I lvoed that the new viewscreens were windows capable of video display. It makes complete sense that such technology would be commonplace by the 23rd Century.

While I loved the film I wish they would have kept (and updated it a bit of course) the original overall black and grey color scheme complete with all the fancy Christmas lights

It had class (the black and grey) and lots of color (thought the lights didnt overwhelm the scene)
Like if they plan a dramatic scene in the future films, wouldnt it be better to have a somewhat darker background so when you have the camera zoom in on Kirk's face, you can focus on his expression instead of being distracted by the bright whizbang WHITE background??????

This new bridge looks like a shopping mall
But thats just me....
Still loved the film, the concept, the action, the reboot, all of it
Welcome back Trek!

Watch the first minute of The Cage again. In the opening scene the camera zooms in from space on the bridge crew through the ceiling "glass". Since it's the rejected pilot you can make of that what you want, but it is generally considered canon.
NextGen also had a bridge with a transparent ceiling. Granted that was another ship, but to me that suggestst the traditional Deck 1 position of the bridge.

Simply look at the bridge panorama on the official site.

User NCC-1701-B is right. The dome sits atop the bridge, and the bridge is in the larger section underneath it.

Thanks for that link! I've always wanted to get a better look at the bridge.. Something that bothers me abt the bridge of the ships in the past Trek movies/tv is that while viewing the viewscreen, you can't even see the part of the front saucer section. For the new movie, J.J Abrams added this detail at the viewscreen in that you can see the forward part of the saucer at the bottom of the viewscreen. It adds believability that they are indeed on top of the saucer.. First noticed this in the beginning of the movie with the USS Kelvin.. Its also clearly seen in that link of the bridge..

That's probably because for past Treks, the video feed that the viewscreen is looking at is probably mounted at the very front of the saucer section, which makes complete sense. Also, they could look at other directions via all the of the "security cams" mounted at other places on the ship's hull.

Hmmm... You're probably right.. Sounds logical enough.. I never thought of the "cam" being mounted at the very front part of the saucer... Fascinating..

But remember in Nemesis, the Scimitar fired straight at the viewscreen and you can see the torpedo coming straight towards the screen before the viewscreen shattered and blew a hole in the bridge of the Enterprise-E... So I doubt there was a "cam" attached on the front saucer there..

Maybe there is also a camera attached right on the front on the outside of the bridge. :p

There also seems to be more activity directly aft of the bridge in some shots. Deck 1 on this Enterprise seems to hold more than just the Bridge.

Yep.

I say: "FINALLY!!"

How idiotic was it to have the "brain" of a starship RIGHT at the top? At least now there's a floor between them and space.

Smart thinking on Abrams part for this one.

Well, imho the bridge should be at the place with the best view (and: no, I don't think the top of a Star Trek ship is that position; ½ the universe cannot be seen b/c of the saucer) not unlike what naval vessels have today.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the fact you could get to the Bridge from a HALLWAY. I thought the only thing on Deck 1 was the Bridge ;)

And as others said, yeah it's still the top...that one CGI shot was just upside down (but accurate).

I liked that aspect, the corridor access and lift access. Makes more sense than just a lift.

The fact that there is a small corridor network and two additional lifts is a logical choice. Easy to evacuate and to get injured personell out easily.

Besides, adds a bit more depth and dimesion to the set being able to see a corridor network, its not so damn isolated.

it seems to be in the forward part of the module, and the dome is a separate room or something...

Forgive the crude drawing, i cant find any decent images of the bridge module

The bridge seems to be on deck 2?

Nah, its still on deck 1.

Maybe by moving it down a notch, they have used their common sense and got AWAY from possible weapons fire.

The dome could be a sensor, a massive shield or Kirks panoramic Shag-Pad.

Making a sensor and shield for the bridge makes the most sense to me.

Back when I was just a kid watching TOS I used to think the reason for the bridge being in that dome was that it could be detached and function as a kind of life boat - made perfect sense to me at the time

I'm pretty sure they used that opening shot from the Cage in the ep where they brought back Pike (though the name has slipped my mind).

As for TNG - the layout of deck one, and the slope down to the observation lounge, on the E-D matched what was seen on the exterior. Just like on Voyager. and the 'cam position' would just be imaging sensors, not any physical equiptment which was shown off in DS9 at some point. If I ever did see a camera I think the tech would ave taken a few steps back ;)

I liked the new positioning for this bridge and how it opens it up to be accessed from more than just a turbolift. The overall placement seemed more logical.. and I assumed the dome above it was a sensor of some sort as it seemed to reflect what was below the TMP saucer.

I was also glad that it was much smaller than it appeared in photos - and seemed a lot more functional than we saw in stills.

I thought the Enterprise's bridge was too flashy, like they'd filmed it in a Mac store with a spherical camera mounted on rollarskates...

I liked the Kelvin's and the Kobayashi bridge.
The Enetrprise's had too much going on and not enough of the shape.

In most cases, it has the observation lounge, toilets and ready rooms (not sure in the film) but i need some pictures of the damn thing!!
