Spoilers The Blacklist - Season 8 Discussion Thread

I doubt anything happened to her rather Boone's silence is part and parcel of Liz's absence. It could be there is some extraordinary situation that the show runners are staying quiet on like The Babylon 5 people stayed quiet on with Michael O'Hare but I don't expect it. I do think the writers are scrambling to come up with a way to bring Liz back for next season or just later in this one since the show revolves around Liz and Red. They wrote Liz into one hell of a hole. I wouldn't be surprised if they revealed this crazy Liz is the imposter and the real one is revealed to have been in hiding since the wedding and 'death' way back when or even as far back as escaping the Russian embassy as Masha Rostova.

Megan Boone is back. Photos from the April 23 episode show Elizabeth. NBC declined to comment about her absence.

I have to admit... I've rather been enjoying the show without her. Her physical absence has not impacted the show's storyline that much, since we know she's lurking in the background. I'd much rather have this revolve around Red and his mysterious identity than Liz's desire for revenge (which may still prove to NOT be what it seemed to be. I'm just sayin').

Having just caught up with the last several episodes, I am now more convinced than ever that a theory that was discussed here two seasons back may be the truth afterall.

I think that Red is, or was, Katarina.

If you listened carefully to what he said once they reached Latvia, Katarina isn't dead, which supports my notion that Maddie Toliver really wasn't Liz's mother. She was an imposter, a plant to keep Townsend and others off the trail of the real Rostova - who made herself disappear by taking Reddington's identity, and by extention, his resources, and began protecting Liz from afar.

I know, call me nuts, but there are so many little things that make sense if this theory is true. As much as I've wanted to believe that Red is Triple-R - the Real Raymond Reddington, I think that he's Liz's other real parent.

Just wanted to put this out there before Episode 21 airs.

If Red is Katarina, the writers didn't earn it. It felt like they were hedging their bets with Maddie Tolliver, trying to play it both ways, and then the season ends and she dies. The end. The biggest issue is why would she think she's Katarina? The Blacklist is the show you point to when you talk about shows spinning their wheels to churn out more seasons.

Clearly Red isn't Red since he didn't give a damn about Jennifer dying.

That last part I agree with totally.

There has ALWAYS been this huge disconnect between Red and Jennifer, so yeah, there's no doubt in my mind that he's not her father. But neither is he Liz's, apparently, but there's been no explanation for his un-ending concern for her well-being. If it ISN'T parental love, I don't know how to define it, which is what keeps bringing me back to the notion that he's Katarina in hiding.

If he isn't, though, he could very well be her twin brother, to whom she entrusted with protecting Liz (and assuming the identity of Triple-R).

At this point in the show, if Red is someone we've never seen or heard of before, that's a cop out. I don't feel like the writers leave clues. They dedicate an entire episode to who Red is but then he's not that person after all. The reveal will be a letdown because of how long they've dragged it out. The bigger mystery should be why he does it, not who he is.

They gave a big clue as to who Red is last year when he and Liz were at a restaurant eating. He said "I yam what I yam". The "real" Red was in Naval Intelligence. If you know the quote he said, you'd get the reference and who Red is.

I remember the quote and at the time, I agreed with your interpretation, but at this point, I just don't feel that he's Triiple-R. No matter who he is, is seems fairly certain that he's Russian by birth (remember that he and Ilya were friends since childhood). That would not be likely if Red was in fact the Real Raymond Reddington.

Nodding to "The Americans", can't the real Raymond Reddington be Russian by birth? Or perhaps he's from a family of Russian agents posing as Americans. He reaches a certain age, joins the Navy, and the rest we know. There may have been no "real" Raymond Reddington at all.

I think next year is going to be a big change up. The Task Force is shutdown, they go to work for "The Blacklist", the most advanced intelligence organization. Katerina will be inside waiting for Liz (and Red).

After last night’s episode

It really looks like they’re going to the Red is really Liz’s mother. But of course they’re holding off on the big reveal next week.

None of this feels earned. Feels like a lot of retconning and reworking things to make everything fit one narrative. Even if they legitimately planned all this, the amount of wheel spinning and double speak and prolonging completely diluted everything. It's like some of the action scenes from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Yes, they were shot practically, but they sure don't look that way.

At this point, I don't see any other out for the narrative except that Katarina became Red. Unless everything we just watched is, pardon the expression, a red herring, I see no other answer that fits the clues that have been dropped.

Even my wife grudgingly agrees that it looks like I'm right about this. We'll see in a week, I reckon.

There's no one else it could be because it'd be really poor storytelling to introduce a new character at this stage, or make Red an existing character without any clues or build up (see The Mentalist or Castle).

Not to mention the need for all the secrecy if say, he was simply her uncle or Katarina's cousin or something. This is as much to protect Katarina as it is Liz. If I'm right, she's been hiding in plain sight for close to 30 years.
