Plus, I can't really think of many characters that fans wholeheartedly despise, and Archer surely isn't one of those few (I can see why some despise Wesley or Neelix, but Archer )
Have you checked your own thread lately?

Why would anyone feel 'made to feel' stupid for liking a Star Trek character?
There is often a lack of acknowledgment, much less acceptance, for differing points of view, especially those perceived as being in the minority.

Taking a pro-Archer stance in a typical discussion, with the atmosphere likely brimming with emotionally-charged negativity against Archer, is like taking a water bucket into a raging bonfire. For some of the old-timers around here, it's just not worth the grief. For any newbies, the prospect might be daunting. (One can make the same case for taking an anti-Trip stance, or a pro-TATV.)

Pluswhich, there's this thing where, if you like something that is widely considered stupid, eventually you and similarly-minded people might be perceived as stupid for liking it...Y'know. Like Trek fandom.

Me? The more crap I see piled on about Archer, the more I like him, because all the creatively cringe-inducing metaphors and hyperbolic awful terrible horriblenesses expressed about him are so not how I perceived the character.

I voted for Phlox because no matter what, he can always put a smile on my face. He's very optimistic, and has a very open outlook on humanity.

Though I do like Trip Tucker a lot (even though he's obviously from East Texas, not Florida, judging from that accent).

Voted for Shran. He was definitely one of the most interesting characters, not only on the show, but probably the entire franchise.

Without a doubt, it's Trip. IMO, Enterprise is nothing without him. Close behind Trip is T'Pol; the Ying to his Yang.
Honorable mention: Shran, Phlox, Cutler and Archer (Kirk's Boyhood Hero).

Hoshi Sato. She can use that tongue with me for other things besides decoding languages.

Had to go with Shran. Just over all well written and played. Runners up....Trip and Archer.

Malcolm Reed obviously. (looks at poll results) Okay, maybe not obviously in THIS thread. A consistently funny, cool and dramatic character. It's too bad that he didn't graduate to Archer, T'Pol and Tucker status, that would have made things real interesting on Enterprise.

As for runners up. Archer had the most character growth, bringing him to second place. Phlox is a close third due to his charater depth.

Voted Archer but have to agree w/ Lady Conqueror that it was a strong ensemble - I didn't really dislike anyone. Found Dctr Phlox utterly charming, too. Exceedingly fond of Porthos too.

Trip was easy to like because he wore his heart on his sleeve and what you saw was what you got (not too hard to look at either notwhithstanding); but Archer was more guarded and required a little digging. Made for a more intriguing persona. Like having to work for your paycheck - it requires work but is more rewarding that way.

Without a doubt in my mind, Dr. Phlox.
Phlox draws me in with his optimism, intelligence and wisdom.
J.
Agreed
Dr. Phlox for me as well,
He liked that he was on Enterprise unlike T'Pol
He liked the situation he was in and interacting with Humans

Chef Riker. ;)

Okay, Hoshi "Sushi" Sato. She was both intelligent and attractive, and we didn't see enough of her.

Trip had that annoying Southern drawl that I can't imagine still existing in his time period. But, like McCoy, he was quite human.
Reed came across as stuck-up and prissy.
Phlox was interesting, but I cringed whenever he was used for comedic purposes.
T'Pol's struggle with humanity was interesting, but I couldn't believe her relationship with Trip.
It seemed like Mayweather had what, ten lines of dialogue in four years? He was treated like an extra. :(

As someone from the south with a slight southern drawl I find that statement both insulting and disappointing.

Anyway, I think the accent adds a bit of charm and shows that society of that time has evolved from the days of degrading people for their heritage.

I regret having written that.

I grew up in the south, but never developed the accent.
