The Battle of Wolf 359!?

Admiral Hanson: " We've mobilized a fleet of forty starships at Wolf 359 and that's just for starters...the Klingons are sending warships... Hell, we've even thought about opening communications with the Romulans..."

That is the full extent of what is known about Klingon (and Romulan) forces at Wolf 359. How many ships were sent is never mentioned.

However, when I did this fanboyish desktop a few years back, I did throw in a few Klingon birds-of-prey.

Is it sacriligious to think of the score to the Battle of Endor when I saw your fantastic picture?

Judging by the Deep Space Nine episode 'Valiant' they still use the Republic and that was Constitution Class

AFAIK, they didn't say which Republic it was (they didn't give a registry number). So it could be of any class. I do find it unlikely that a stock Connie would still be in use, over a century out of date.

sailing ships are frequently used as training vessels in modern navies even though they're out of step with things like AEGIS radars, nuclear power-plants, CIWS guns and cruise missiles.

Interesting how Jake phrases that thing in "Valiant", really: the Republic is "the other training ship" in Starfleet.

Do they only have two? Or is the Republic such a famous training vessel that even the ignorant civilian Jake Sisko would know about her, and thus use the term "that other vessel"? If the latter, we could indeed think of her being a venerable Constitution, of great newsworthiness even when she isn't capable of warp any more.

Of course, the Wolf 359 derelicts included ships that looked even more ancient, such as one of the triangular McQuarrie-designed ships intended for Trek revival back before the first movie. Since Wolf 359 is practically next door to Earth, perhaps Starfleet reactivated some museum ships on Earth orbit, where the Starfleet Museum supposedly lies, as a last-ditch defense. (Or perhaps Starfleet Museum is actually located at Wolf 359?)

...Or that she was a training vessel when Kirk served aboard her, for that matter. Fanfic generally assumes she was, but probably just because fans think that Kirk was still training in the Academy at that stage, despite clearly having graduated already and holding the rank of Ensign.

And do we even know that the 'original' Republic was Constitution-class? :vulcan:

there's no on-screen evidence to suggest it is. the registry number should suggest not, NCC 13XX, but then again, registries are often all over the shop...

Actually, I'm not sure if the McQuarrie models ever made it into the graveyard. They've been rumored to be there for a long time, but Ex Astris Scientia has never been able to confirm their presence.

Kirk once said that Captain Garrovick of the Farragut was his commanding officer "from the day I left the Academy". Unless Garrovick was also commanding the Republic at some point (which wouldn't be impossible), then Kirk's rank of Ensign was most likely a field commission while he was still a cadet. In which case the Republic could well have been a training vessel.

The "field commission" theory sounds to improbable as to be, well, chuckleworthy. After all, we know from Gary Mitchell's stories that Kirk was teaching in the Academy while Lieutenant - surely that wasn't another "field commission"?

More probably, Kirk simply graduated, then decided to stay at the Academy as instructor, and only went out to the field after attaining Lieutenant (jg?) rank and joining the Farragut crew.

And serving as instructor aboard the Republic should have been possible even if she weren't a dedicated training vessel. It would be standard real-world practice to teach a small number of cadets aboard regular service vessels - even more so in the Hornblower era that Trek likes to emulate than today. The E-D and DS9 both had cadets aboard at one point, too...
